ps - this pic was a few months ago wen i was on my L's Yes absolutely. It's looks to have some salt bleaching or strong oxidation from a lack of protective oils. Single stage paints dry up and crack if the oils are not regularly fed to them A two step level and polish then followed by a oily glaze (Driven, Clearkote vanilla and yellow moose) should do the trick. Hopefully there is enough paint left to do it.

Bit late posting it but lee's ED XR8 won it's class in the h vs ford show and looked superb on the day. A nice little trophy is sitting on the shelf.
It was a great day although too many holdens unfortunately. Would of been nice to have a equal amount.

Hi there,
I have to firstly thank you for supplying this help and your expertise to me and the rest of us as it is very helpful! Your car looks great! I was hoping you could help me in regards to my fathers car(and I hope you have not already covered this as I have not read every page yet), My Fathers car is not often washed, and cared for as it should be, and I’d really like to clean it up and make it look nice. I did go about washing it the other day, and noticed a great deal of (what I call it) 'baked on' dirt. As in, the paint is rough to touch and you can see many little spots on the paintwork. The car is a mere 6 years old. I was wondering if you could give me any tips to help remove this as I'm too scared to do anything more then touch the paint currently as I may scratch it with dirt slowly coming off etc Thanks in advance. |

It looks better in the flesh as no camera can capture what the human eye sees. OK the first thing to do is give it a damn good warm shampooing at either your place or at a commercial coin op place Then clay the paint and glass thoroughly with a clay magic or meguiars mirror glaze clay bar (the strongest type) You may need a clay magic red bar. Once that is done, remove all old wax and inbuilt dirt, grime with PREPSOL Just spray it on the paint well and rub it in well with a terry towel cloth That will make the paint squeaky clean. It will make noise when you buff it with the towel. From there on, hand polish (unless you have a machine) with a paint leveler or compound (1000 to 1500 grit) using a thick foam pad (keep it damp) Follow that with a 2000 to 2500 grit polish and if you want to, a final glaze Make sure to use one side for 1st step, other side of pad for the polish and then rinse the pad clean before doing the 3rd step If you don't do that you can cause micro marring or not get the results you want as compound particles may affect the performance of the glaze Then your final choices 1. use an All in one sealant - Carlack 68 yellow 2. Use a two step acrylic sealant - Jeffs Werkstatt prime acrylic and Acrylic Jett. 3. Do either and then after a three day curing time, apply carnauba paste wax (p21s, pinnacle, zymol) for more depth and wet look. Then just wash with a soft shampoo/conditioner and be careful how you wash and what towels you use. you will just end up with a swirled and marred finish again if your not careful and smart Please visit australianautodreamz.com and check out the forums for more advice and chat. I'm on there and des from autofx WA is a great detailer and contributor to the forum. As he's in your state, he's the man to see if your own hand polishing doesn't provide you with a fantastic finish. One thing about detailing that I find very true Don't rush when doing the job, take your time and never cut corners The time taken is well worth it when you see the car.

Wow!
Thanks for the extremely prompt reply, very helpful! I'm just curious if it's hard to find these products? I may go have a look around today for them. I bought some 'Polyglaze Diamond Finish Glaze' and two 'Polishing Towels' yesterday, and now I'm not sure if they are any good. I'm assuming not. Thanks again. |

You will find prepsol at bunnings or other hardware or paint supply store Besides that, des can show you where to go for clay bars and polishes Polyglaze would probably contain fillers and just hide rather than remove, scratches, swirl marks and oxidation Get in contact with rusty at detailers obsession or william at KDS (kleen dry shine for some killer polishes)

G'day, just wondering of any detailers in Melbourne you reccomend aside from Final inspection? I'm looking at a $300 tops job? All im really after is a good paint treatment and a good polish to get rid of the stuff i cant get out and to help hide some scratches and swirl marks
Cheers

here's a tip for those with the clearcoat paints.
Don't put kero in the wash water like the old guys used to do decades ago. That's fine for single stage paints but the kero will eat through your clearcoat or dry and dull your finish.

My dad has always said to put a touch of metho in a bucket of water and soak the chamois in it, wring it out then wipe the water off. He says it helps avoid streaking. I'm a bit iffy on it. Is this an ok thing to do or can it wreck the paint over time? Oh and can you recommend any detailers in sydney, preferably in the st george or sutherland shire areas? Cheers.
EDIT: oh and one quick question. Whats the best way to get swirl remover off of mudflaps? I managed to get a little bit on one and the damn stuff wont come off, its driving me crazy!

Doesn't sound like a good idea. You may even dry out the chamois over time as well.
Unfortunately I can't give any suggestions for sydney detailers. None I know and have not seen any in action

I was not trying to steal anyone's thunder, just letting people know some cheaper alternatives as these products can be expensive, anyway I hope this makes you happy. Last edited by Fordboy-1984 on Wed Feb 07, 2007 8:29 am, edited 1 time in total. |

Yes there are some that are. Don't need to polish every couple of months though. Sealers take care of that for a year or so.
I never fell for the zaino or zymol marketing. Zaino's probably better but I ain't paying that much.
