Hi all,
Just a quick one.. What is the chrome strip stuff in the fairmont door trims called? I used to see rolls of it on ebay all the time but lately now that I really need it, I can't find it anywhere. Any ideas? one of my chrome strips looks pretty bad.. the rest seem OK though. Was toying with the idea of sanding them back and colour coding them blue like the rest of the trim.. If I can't find the stuff at a reasonable price, I guess thats what I'll be doing. Ta |

That chrome stripe that is a part of the moulding you can't buy. The mould is constructed using a different type of chrome insert to what you have seen on Ebay. The one in the mould is wider and thicker so it might make it a little tough to use that b/bar mould. It would be a hit and miss with trying to find a complete mould for the doors as they are all obsolete from Ford.

Hey Frankieh is the chrome strip stuff on the Fairmont trims an actual mould or is just like a chrome tape?
I got away with using chrome pinstripe tape on my EF Fairmont (didnt have any chrome trims in the first place) and it came out looking pretty good. The only problem is its a bit of a b**ch applying it around bends when it comes to the corners of the bumper. For the door moulds it should be all good though. Picked it up from Repco, and they come in different widths. I used 12mm i think on my Mont. Its about $15 for a roll. You might also be able to pick it up in lengths from a local panel beater i guess. Attachment: Attachment:

Kind of.. it's a 12mm chrome strip that is recessed into the fairmont trims... its 12mm wide and about 3mm thick.

Ford stock the Front Chrome Strips for EA-ED (might be the same for the EF/EL), the don't stock the rear though, I have to source that elsewhere.
As for those side moulds, they are integrated into the mould itself, apparently you can buy this chrome foil stuff that you can use instead, and carefully cut it and so forth. I can ask the bloke that told me that what the stuff's called?

If you remove the whole door mould (fiddly), you can then take out the chrome strip, the ends of which hide behind the ends of the mould itself. On the outside the chrome strip "disappears" behind the mould.
Should the chrome be damaged or otherwise be in poor condition through weather, UV etc., you could try putting that chrome pinstripe tape over the top, as KWIKXR suggested above. Auto stores sell chrome moulding but it's usually either 10mm or 15mm in width -- the Ford ones are 12mm . |

just get a sticker/vinyl shop to make you up any width & length chrome sticker to put over the top, would look exactly the same and cost far less, and less headaches trying to source some

It may come to that.. but I'm also not convinced yet that it wouldn't look better if I sanded the chrome off and just color coded the whole thing N9 ford blue.
Still evaluating my options.. I know I can get 5 metres of the stuff sent over from germany for about 100 aud.. but only actually need a metre or two so that's kinda overkill. |

yeah yeah.. I know...
The Sierra is finished as promised to the wife. Tomorrow, assuming my 2 day old daughter doesn't delay me.. I'm moving the EL into the shed after a clean up and ripping off the front end in preparation for putting all the bits in. |

try your local auto paint shop, they usually stock the chrome strip inserts, u can buy it by the metre from 9mm right up to 19mm,it is a d shaped insert with double sided tape on the flat of the d. the side mouldings on the ea-ed is a chrome vinyl tape applied over the moulding, el use the 12mm chrome plastic backed insert with double sided tape for the door moulding inserts.
