I need a bit of help wiring up some driving lights in the EF.

I spent this afternoon doing the wiring for them, and found something strange, hopefully someone can shed some light on the topic for me.

I want to be able to switch them on either on their own or come on with the high beams like a proper driving light install.

I have put an ON-OFF-ON switch inside the car, one on is hooked up to the cigarette lighter. The other is hooked to the high beam relay cable off the steering column (gr-r) the outputs from the switch are linked together and run through the firewall and to a relay. Obviously the lights then go through the relay.

the relay turns on and off just fine with the accessories.

when i try to turn it on with the high beams though, something odd happens. the stalk high beam switch turns everything on properly, but when i turn off the stalk switch, the actual headlights stay on high. :?

has anyone encountered this before, and can anyone point me in the right direction for what i need to do to get it sorted? i'll draw up a wiring diagram if anyone wants to see it.

dude,,all you need to do is run the wire for the lights from the relay through the switch first then to the lights.

two core cable is fine,i have mine wired up like this and have never had a problem with them.

why make things harder.

unless you call it a "fog light".... then it must be wired to the park lights. Must be able to be switched off independantly and only used in foggy conditions..... in QLD anyway

and must also have a switch installed between the output from the relay and the lights as is legally required aswell.

yeah i want to be able to do that. i just want to be able to turn them on if i want to anyway. i wont use them often like that, i dont want to be one of those tools with driving lights on around town!! :lol: but the problem i am having at the moment is with them turning off with the dipper switch. it turns on properly, but when the dipper switch is flicked off the driving lights and the actual high beams stay on?? :?

FordFairmont, i see you've put the headlight as the trigger for the relay, is that the actual light itself you've tapped into?

From Looking at your diagram i can see and comparing it to fordfairmonts diagram that there is a problem with your connections on the relay to be exact....

FordFairmonts:
87:Positive wires from lights go here.
86:Trigger wires goes to headlight or/switch
85:Neg/Earth
30:Positive Batterey Terminal

Nicco's:
87:Positive wires from lights go here.
86:Earth/Neg
85:Trigger Switch
30:Pos Battery

By going with FordFairmonts Digram your 86 and 85 are incorrect maybe explaining why it doesn't turn off. Maybe you draw it incorrect double check. :D

hrmm possibly, but it was working fine on the accesories power option. so the relay is triggering properly. the problem must be something to do with the high beams line that i have tapped into.

at this rate i will just run another line in from the actual high beams like FordFairmont has put. but i am still curious as to why its doing what its doing

nicco, if you dont want a switch you can just run the trigger wire from the relay straight to the appropriate headlight wire you want to trigger the driving lights with

no its not that, i want a switch with an extra option!! :lol:

i'm looking for it to be:
- on with high beam
- off
- on with accessories

for option one i'll just run it how you have it i think

Oh OK i see, you got a ON-OFF-ON switch. Im not that know it all but...you have two power sources on the switch right?? one is from your accessories and one from the tapped headlight wire. and the other one goes to the relay. So wouldnt you need a Negative also on the switch? Also Just Check if you have it correctly connected on the relay...as you say it works....sometimes when you have an half completed circuit you would find that not everything works.

Also forgot to mention you might need to get a three-way switch or something i don't know what its called but you need a switch that will activate on which ever power source u have... :?

the switch i have got has three positions. and there is three pins on the back of it, lets say left, middle and right. when the switch is in one on position left and middle form a circuit. in the other on position right and middle form a circuit. in the off position none of them form a circuit. so in my situation i have left coming from the acc, right coming from the high beams and middle going out to the relay. it gets grounded on the output of the relay.

but anyway, i went yesterday and had a bit of a scope around to do it the FordFairmont way. All looks pretty good so i'll wire it up that way on the weekend. i will let you all know how i go.

You gonna be connecting it up to the dash?? might get more complicated but will be good to see a visual on the dash that you have it turned ON.
