I'm getting some new lights to put in the brake duct vents on my new front bar, looking at the Narva Compac 80 (I think that's the ones) there kinda ovalish and should fit sweet.
But they come as either driving lights or fog lights, which do I want? I guess driving lights throws out a further beam than the fog lights? |

Driving lights can only be used on high beam. Theyre basically spot lights. Fog lights are used to light up the road under the fog. If theyre too bright it lights up the fog and makes you think youre driving into a white brick wall....

I'd say in Tasi you more likely use fog lights than driving lights eh??
Get which ever one is more practical for you!!

Get which ever one is more practical for you!! if you get alot of heavy fog... then you know what a bastard it is to drive through so get the fog lights... if not.. get driving lights if your high beams arnt that good if non of the above, save your money

well there gunna be hooked up to my low beams and I ain't worried about the legalities at this stage. I reckon I'll get the fog ones just couse.

get fog lights high beamers do f**k all in fog, infact it makes it worse

Have a look at this page http://www.narva.com.au/ForwardLighting_2.html I also used compac 80 in my brake ducts, I used the fog type as I use them to suppliment the piss poor low beam lights on the EL. The differance is the type of beam put out by the refector. A fog light will emit a wide beam as opposed to a driving light which puts out a spot beam.

Also it's useless putting driving lights that low ... you won't get the range out of them.
Rule of thumb ... foglights should be mounted in the lower bumper region (lower then headlights) Driving lights should be mounted the same height as your factory headlights (not higher though as it is illegal to be mounted above headlights ... for on-road use).

I thought driving lights had to be lower than eye height when sitting in the car?

The centre of the driving light must not be higher than the centre of the standard headlight ... or thereabouts.

Are they for show (i.e driving around in the daytime with them on) or for practicle reasons?

Bit of both. I've got no idea how good the XR lights are as I havn't fitted them, but I do much prefer the look of the car with lights in the lower area aswell. Gives a more modern impression aswell since most new cars come factory with it. |

speak to MRE-40L ... he has a set of projectors mounted in his lower front bar on the XR ... and they have the proper flat top cut-off beam a projector produces.
I think he is running a standard globe in there (55w) ... and has them hooked up to a switch for use with parkers ... when needed in fog. Neat setup ... might be cheaper than getting a set of foglights as well. And from what I have seen ... a better beam pattern too.

If it's mainly for show, grab the set-up which looks the best. Either way, both fog and driving lights can be wired up to be swithced on with the parking lights. |
