Its because the GLi and Futura lights were revised for the EL
The Fairmont and Ghia in the EL continued to use the same light design as the EF, (all EF lights were the same)

EF lights, and EL Fairmont and Ghia lights will suffer this problem, but EL GLi and Futura's shouldn't have the problem for quite a few more years.

PS, its not restricted to just Falcons. Its the sun's UV that does it...
Check out any older Jap import, or Yank import with Polycarbonate lenses (especially limos ;-) seen a few of them lately!) and they all suffer to some degree from the yellowing and opaqueness.

Its our damn Ozone Hole. The same reason that older Jap cars always get cracked and faded dashes and seats.

But funny only one Headlight has got the problem, and not both. But my EL is coming up to 8 years old and I have only noticed the passenger side showing a slight yellowing and opaqueness you refer to 96Ghia. I have noticed a lot of hideous looking headlights on some Jap cars such as on Soarers, Supras and Silvias.

Btw anyone looking for Plexus, go straight to marine shops. Auto shops dont really sell it.
It does the job if your persistent, and its a far lower impact way of doing things than sanding.

Theres also a million other things on the falcon you can polish up with it with little effort, black plastic side mirrors love it and plenty of stuff under the engine bay comes up nice.

yeah, I wasn't suggesting the advantage would be increased wattage globes, just the fact they would be glass means they would be easier to clean and wouldn't oxidize and go yellow over time.

It built up a residue that wouldnt come off. The rags stuck to the lense. They are so yellow and now very misty and the light gets reflected all over.

a little of topic but how the f**k do u get the headlights out, i've undone all the bolts, removed the indicator and i cant find a way to get it out of the car, its loose and will come out if i can find a way to manouver it out!! i have a replacment pair sitting in my boot ready to go.

prepare the car by removing the indicator. The screw is located in the engine bay just above the indicator. Slide it out.

Next run tape uder the headlight the length of the bumper. Apply a couple of layers as they will wear through.

ok now we are ready....

get a bucket of water mixed with detergent and dunk the wet and dry 600 in. start sanding slowly with light pressure, in a back and forth motion from left to right.

keep dunking the sandpaper because it will clog fast. It will take some time, however be patient because soon you wil notice it has developed a milky film on the lens.

next repreat the process with the 800, then the 1200, and finally the 2000. It should be nice and clear at the time you are ready to use the 2000 wet and dry, but i prefer to use it as it gets the finer detail.

ok now apply the plexus (or whatever wax you have). this is it. your lens should look brand new.

this has worked really well for me. If you want some pics of the process just PM me.


we have done heaps of headlamps this way and 90% of them come out really good if they have crows feet in them they need more sanding and dont come out quite as good.

So what is this Plexus stuff? (ie, is it a polisher?)

And do you use just that or do you have to sand first? sorry, but i just joined this cause its starting to piss me off too.

Really depends how far gone yer lights are :).
mine are just starting to fog so it brings them up to shine again. But if you wanna remove yellow then I think sanding is probably the only option as plexus just aint gonna take enough plastic off. unless you wanna buff for eternity.

Plexus is something you buy off the shelf and simply you just use a clotch and wipe the yellow crap off..

ts a surface finish, looks like paint that was wet and had birts walk all over it leaving "crows feet" pattern over the surface of whatever material is in question, ie the headlight lenses..

I just did this tonight except I used Meguires ScratchX as the final cutting agent and did not use 2000 grade wet and dry. Used Sugar Soap instead of detergents and buffed the scratchX several times at low-medium speed

The results were about 85% of what I had hoped which aint bad for a first effort and the lights are clear and white for the first time in a while.

2000 would have topped it off properly and I think I'll redo from there again on the weekend.
