I want to fit the EL GT grille to my EL fairmont Ghia. I know it should be a straight swap but is there anything I should be aware of?

Has anyone done this swap before? Any advice would be appreciated.

It won't fit an EF because the headlights and bonnet are different on the EL. The headlights taper off to a thinner point (very slight change), allowing the more prominant grille. NL fairlaines also share the light/bonnet combo as well.

Above poster has an ef fairmont.
Bonnets, bumpers, headlights from fairmont/fairlanes from both ef,nf,el,nl, are the same.

ef el low end models have the same lights.
ef/el low end models have different bonnets and bumpers, from each other.

el gt on the other hand, well i thought there grille was integrated into the bumper?
Light and bonnet situation, not a clue.

It's very easy to miss because the change is so subtle but EL Ghia/NL Fairlaine and EL GT have a unique headlight and bonnet. I just had the headlight replaced and the panelbeater didn't even pick up the error and ordered a EF/L Fairmont light. The differences are more apparrent when you try to fit one.

This picture will show it more clearly. Note the way the bonnet slopes into the grill differently on each model.

if you look closely on the EF grille though, you will see that the actual whole unit is the same size as the EL grille, the EF one has a smaller opening though. (what i mean is, lookk where the top of the EF grille joins to the bonnet, look how high it is)

The problem is that angle that the pieces are designed to slot together are different.

It is a sneaky way of making each model different to each other so that aftermarket part volumes are lower overall which means that they are more expensive. Every update changes the facias to 'freshen up' the models (a great example is the change between the BA and BF faclon's headlights) but really it is just a pain in the a*** for guys like us.....

Theyre interchangeable champ, just like 99% of EF/EL parts.

IIRC they had three 'front ends'

low - GLi/Futura
XR - XR's duh
high - Fairmont/Fairlane/LTD/GT

The low front end changed from EF to EL (and parts not swappable), XR and high front ends fully swappable. EF low had pointy headlights (like high, but different), EL had rounded headlights (unlike anything else).

Front end consists off, front bar, headlights, grille, bonnet. Front quarter panels all the same.

Correct.

I did, perfect straight swap and fit. Headlights are identical.:)

EF & EL Bonnets, Headlights, Front Bar, Guards and indicators anre the same as are the taillights. No differences at all with the bonnet and the headlights, all are interchangable and as has been said the grills are interchangable as well.
