hey guys,
i think the next big mod on my EL wagon will be the installation of a sunroof. i love the look of them, i think they really finish a car off. anyway, i was at the wreckors the other day and saw a few e series cars with sunroofs in them, i am going to go and cut one out one night this week. anyway, i just got off the phone to a place called the sunroof centre in melbourne, and i got told that they charge 1000 dollars to install a 2nd handy, and theyre so old that they normally have to replace alot of the mechanical parts and ends up costing more than a new one (1950$) this is the only quate i got, but it seems a bit expensive. anyone done this before? any help would be great! cheers gumby

BenJ has installed his own sunroof.
$1000 to install a second hand unit is a bit steep. As for replacing bits, it depends on how the roof was looked after previously. Usually a seal & a lube job would be enough for one that has been looked after. I have a sunroof here that I'm going to install myself, stuff paying $1000 to cut a hole in my roof, drill a couple of drain tube holes, then to tek screw the sunroof into the roof & wire it's 2 wires up, then modify the roof lining to suit. There isn't too much more to it than that! Cheers ToranaGuy

Cheers ToranaGuy a) Glad Ben found it so easy, think he may have had a little help. b) You think it is that simple. 1) You need to ensure that you template for cutting the roof is aligned properly and I don't just meen central. You need to ensure that you are not too far forward or back. If you go too far back you will need to remove another roof brace, too far forward on a wagon and the gurve of the roof interfers with the sunroof. 2) you dont need to drill holes for drain tubes, they run down inside the A and C pillars. 3) The sunroof is "glued" to the roof, brackets and tek screws are only used to hold in place while adhesive goes off. Brackets taken from a sedan will be useless in a wagon diue to the difference in the roof. 4) Wiring need to be attached to correct wires so that the roof works correctly. Key off roof closes etc. 5) Just modify roof lining. In the sedan there will be very little left of the lining after it is cut away to fit the sunroof, wagon is a little more forgiving due to the difference in the roof. It is doable for the DIY but there is work involved, Cutting the roof is the nervous part LOL. If you feel capable go for it but remember measure 3 times cut once and cut inside the marks, much easier to trim out a little extra than trying to fill a gap you don't want. By the way, $1000.00 to install a Sunroof, if that includes rooflining is a very good price. My new rooflining to suit a sunroof cost me $200.00 and was money well spent and when I do the wagon I will be doing the same. |

Yes SWC, he did have some help, but I didn't really want to write a bible on the topic right here, the post was more to inspire the dude to have a read of BenJ's thread & see for himself. We can't spoon feed everything, if the OP can't lookup the thread & have a good hard read & study it they shouldn't be attempting the job!
Cheers ToranaGuy

i helped remove one and it is so basic it is not funny if you have the tools to for the job you probably have the experience to do it on a sedan the support that is above the drivers head( maybe a little behind ) has 2 small bolts either side once removed if it doesn't fall off ( because it is glued ) carefully pry it off or thump the roof and it will do it its self , and the sunroof unit bolts up to the same place run drip tubes to the rear quarter there is provisions for the hoses and a bung plugs to remove , second hardest thing to do after finding a good sunroof is cutting the hole , there are many many ways to do that jigsaw plasma nibbler tin-snips oxy mother in laws evil stare while you do it in her driveway it is about a 6 pack job for 2 to do _
