Gidday All.

I am seeking advice from any members who have had anything to do with installing a sunroof into an E Series Ford, or just advice in general regarding E Series Factory Sunroof issues.

I will be fitting a Factory EF Electric Sunroof to my EB Station Wagon. If you have read my build thread you will know I am not adverse to a challenge, and like all my other mods, I intend to do a fair bit of research before attacking the roof with a Grinder :P

Issues I have considered.
Have to cut bloody big hole in the roof - Yikes - Placement important
How to attach sunroof to roof - I believe some sort of sikaflex is used - anything else?
Waterproofing and drainage - I believe there are some drain tubes in the factory installs - where to they run?
Electrics - I believe the dash end of the electrics are missing - What are the modes of operation?
Hoodling and interior light - I would like to have a go at modifying this myself

If there are any other points that you think I have missed please let me know.

In addition if anyone has copies of the factory wiring diagrams for the Sunroof Operation from EB-ED and for EF-EL I would love to get my hands on it.

Cheers
BenJ

Your gunna have to roll the edge of the hole after you cut it. the drain tubes run down the c pillars on a sedan, (not sure on wagon). single two way switch does both actions I assume through a relay, and my factory fitted one is wired direct, (ie not through ign or acc)
Good luck on this one, its gunna be a challenge without the right tools.

Interesting. I will check out the two cars I have access to with sunroofs. One was a factory fitment, and the other an after market fitment last year. It will be interesting to see if both have rolled edges.

For the drain tubes, it probably doesn't matter which pillar I use, so long as there is natural 'fall' and a suitable exit. I may even use the A pillars and drain into the plenum area.

I am assuming the switch is a dual action momentary center off design? If so I should be able to find a suitable substitute at Jaycar. I have been giving some thought as to whether I want to have auto closing or not. I think there is a lot of merit to being able to leave the trailing edge of the suroof open on hot days.

just don't kink the roof :P

as soon as you remove the roof cross member the roof is pretty flimsy.

LOL - Plenty of room in a wagon for that LOL

I will PM Amber and see if she has any advice on installing the sunroof that is :)

Good point. Unfortunately, or in my case fortunately, my roof already has a number of dents and kinks in it. So hopefully it can't get much worse.

Yes Benj you are right about the switch. If I had auto closing on mine I would have an overide switch so I could leave it open on hot days. The drain tubes will depend on wether the channels drain to the front or the back. The headlining is also different, it is lower to allow the roof panel to slide inside it.

Nothing is impossible, you can put a square peg in a round hole if you've got enough money.

Thanks for confirming that. I could set up the auto closing from my alarm system, and as you suggested install a switch to prevent that if desired. More ideas for consideration.

I will know more after I pick the sunroof up on the 4th.

I am aware of the differences in the hoodlining. In the wagon there appears to be more room between the roof and the lining so this should (in theory) make it easier to mod the hood lining. I will give it a go first, and if I can't get it to look right, will get a local trimmer to make one.

I don't need money to do that. :D Just some determination, a few tools, carefull planning and confidence in my skills to get it done. That is how the mods on the wagon got to where they are today.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Keep the comments and ideas coming.

Cheers
BenJ

Ben,

I have 4 drain tubes, not 2. They run down both A and C pillars. The ones down the A pillars exit just ourside the seal in the door jam.
The 2 back ones go down the c pillars, around the wheen arch, and they exit between the wheen arch and the factory amp.

and I have no intention of taking my roof lining down :P
I have been told that it is difficult to put back up.
