Hi there,
I've got a friend about to do a cheap paint job on my XD Ute, how good is the best enamel paint these days? can you get a good shine out of it? similar to acrylic with clear?

And how long would you expect it to last before it fades?

finally, what polish is best for enamel?

enamel paints have got alot better these days apparently

Thanks

i wouldnt paint with enamel again.....ive used both and u get a much better job with acrylic especially if u use clear coat and buff the f**k out of it...acrylic dries as soon as it hits the car basically, where as enamel stays wet for a while...ull get a heaps better shine out of acrylic straight off the gun, but when i used enamel no matter how much i cut & polished it i couldnt get it to shine....

yeah im using 18hr drying enamel, i really want it to shine, but the painter who's doing me a ripper price (free) loves enamel.

Hopefully it'll shine somehow! :)

Thanks for the input.

well fair enuf if he's doin it, coz hes obviouslty good at doin it, so just go with wat he says.....if he knows enamel he should know how to make it shine for ya...i was lookin at it from an amatuer's perspective....id say use acrylic clear to get a relly good shine, but ull have to let it dry really well (id leave it a few days) coz if you spray the acrylic clear on the enamel whilst its still wet itll f**k it up coz the top coats dry while the colours still wet...

there are different types/grades of enamel, and I would use a decent quality with a hardener over acrylic anyday, simply cos you dont need to polish it every 3 months and it is a lot more durable.
Acrylic is over rated, and is best left for show cars and once a month cruisers, that get buffed before every outing. Meguires wet look is a good polish
thats only my 2 cents anyway fom previous experiences. cheers kenny

are the enamel paints the ones that benefit from being baked in the paint oven?
what about two pac whats the go with that? I have seen some nice shiny two pac paint jobs - just flat colours like red or blue or white etc. are they any good?

when "baked" enamels tend to level out and get that smooth orange peel free finnish, and also gives it a realy hard shell.
Two pak paints are the ducks nuts as they are simmilar to epoxy resin meaning the paint doesnt evaporate the thinners to set, but is a chemical reaction meaning it doesn't shrink and need sanding and buffing for a good finnish, but you need to be good with a gun cos what you get off the gun is the final finnish

Must be a NSW restriction. You can buy it in Vic a mate of mine painted his bike in it at home under heat lamps.
