Guys, I have a 1991 model Ford Fairmont Ghia which has non-color matched untreated external door handles that are looking a bit s**t because of their age. I have tried to blacken them by using Mother's Back to Black, but it hasn't made any difference after three attempts.
Is there any other method of making these handles look as black as they were when they left the factory without going to the expense, and I do mean expense of getting them professional sprayed ??

Why proffesional spray, just remove them and sand and spray them yourself, 2 cans of spray, one black, one clear.

Take off your door trims, just a few screws then they lift out basically.
Then there are a couple of nuts that need to be undone that hold the door handles on, I think these are 10mm. There is also a little clip - just squeeze it and push it through.
You should then be able to take them off. Might as well spray them the colour of the car - will look good.

ef/el fit, but are slightly smaller in physical size (bolt holes and key hole line up) so if your paint is crappy and marked underneath you will have to look at it everyday.

EF = key hole passenger and driver side
EL = key hole driver side only.

I know you can get rid of the AU lock by fitting the rear drivers door handle, but the lock barrel on the E series sticks out too far. Well, thats what i looks like, and i never thought to try the rear when i put mine on. Another option would be to totally remove the lock barrel from the doors, and fit rear handles. Not sure how different the size of the footprint is, but it might be smaller and would then not look quite as good. I WOULD contemplate this, but have no remote unlocking! Presmartlock car :(

Heres my car, with ef door handles fitted. Bought brand new from ford, 30 dollars per rear handle, 35 for each front. So 130 dollars for the handles, and it cost me another 120 to get them painted. Not the easiest things to fit when youve never opened up the doors, but its not too bad.

I just removed and left the barrel off from the passenger side to fit the EL handles, I have a driver door lock, a boot lock and thats all.

Shhhhh, photochop at this stage. Anyone willing to donate to the "get andrew some more mags" fund? All money goes to a worthy cause!
