I own a Ford Fairlane, '83 model, which is a ZK.
So far all 4 of my doors have failed on me. When I say fail, I mean don't open!! Does anyone know how to stop this happening?! I bought a new handle kit from AutoOne, installed that after many hours of frustration, then the door worked fine......for about a week, now doesn't open again!! It's a hell pain in the a**!! So if anyone has suggestions, or know someone who'll do "Pop-Doors" relatively cheap, please, please, please drop a line!! Cheers guys,

The general cause is because the doors have sagged and are scraping on the strikers as you open the door.
This causes you to use the handle to lift the door higher, which in turn breaks the handle eventually because of the stress. So, the fix is to realign the doors, or replace the bush in the hinge to help lift that door back up a bit. |

if you use your thumb to put pressure on the top of the handle it wont break i had X-series falcons(prolly 15 falcons) for over ten years and only every broke 2 handles

the other common problem is the bar between the handle and the latch straightens out due to the opening and closing thus been when you open you have to pull harder and higher stretchin it more and eventuly snapping the handle

i used to slowly lift the handle with my thumb pushing down from the top without lifting it or pulling it up and it would always open, i couldnt stand it when people would just yank the door up ways hard and couldnt open it..

I knew i wasn't the only one with door problems!!
I've had to do the "special" opening of doors since I've owned it! Eventually had to get my knee into the door. Makes sense with the sagging, had a servo mechanic tell me the hinges were done for, but wanted to charge me like $500 to fix the 2 front doors! Also, the latch thing on the frame, a bit of rubber in those dissapears after a while, replaced that, still didn't fix it! Ill have to try this door hinge thing I suppose. Cheers guys!

Lube the striker. It is in the hand book that came with the car.

Call me stupid, but what's the striker?
I didn't get a manual for my car when I bought it, I bought a book on how to fix stuff on it, but has nothing on how to fix my door problem. I've bought new handle kits, but the locking mechanism still stuffs up & i can't unlock the door! The internals of those doors are screwy as well, damn poles with curved ends, gotta get them in in the right order, such a pain, especially when your only guessing!!
