So yesterday i managed to... um... acquire an EL front lip spoiler (see my build thread for the story that goes with that) but it has a bit of damage.
its got a big crack in the centre and the left hand end is a bit munted too. i have all the patches that smashed out of it. Does anyone have any tips for what i should be doing to repair this lip? or know of any good websites i can have a read of? i've never fibreglassed before, but this would be a great opportunity for me to learn. |

buy 2 things a fibregalss repair kit (fibreglass sheets, epoxy and hardener) use this on the inside of the lip to stick the broken bits back in.its very easy to use and will come with instructions.
use a fibre filler (bog with fibreglass pretty much) use this to fill the gaps/cracks at the front, then sand down.

I would use some kinda strong glue to stick the pieces back in first, then hit up the fibreglass on the back, then fibreglass filler on the front.
Make sure you rough up the surface a bit when doing the fibreglassing/filler. Obviously remove any paint lol.

Here is a good place to go to get some tips about fibreglassing. Can also buy from them. Also watch some youtube clips for some tips. Helped me a fair bit in repairing my bike fairing. Make sure you have a mask to cover your nose/mouth and also some safety goggles. phong =P~

With fibreglass once you learn how to it seems simple as... I suggest that you get some masked tape and tape all the broken peices in place and then put some light stripes of fibreglass on the other side let it dry and then strengthen it by reapply some glass on the front and back.

Also make sure you buy acetone...I forgot to check before I did my last bit and realised I was out...not good
I made a big a** sanding block too, i found its heaps better than those piddley little bastards when trying to get an even finish on subjects that are going to be finished in a glossy colour.

acetone is for cleanup, washing out your brush / mixing pot. can also use general purpose thinners.

When fibreglassing, the surfaces that need to be repaired have to be clean for good adhesion. Acetone is good for this and dries quick. But before you clean the surface of the parts you want put back together, you have to give it a bit of a sanding.
Try fibreglassing thin sheets and maybe other items before you attempt on your actual job...saves you from more headaches. Make sure you wear latex gloves or something. Chemicals are bad for you...and makes it cleaner. When you are sanding/cutting fibreglass, make sure you wear a mask and if you like, powder up your arms if you have a T-shirt on to clog the pours to stop fibres getting in and becoming all itchy. Good luck phong =P~
