hey all
looking at fitting my fairmont boot garnish this weekend - does anyone have any ideas/tips/suggestions etc on how best to do this? by the looks of it its ~4mm drill bit i'll be needing - might go get a brand spanking new one rather than use the rusty ones around home and yes i know - measure twice drill once!

ALSO either punch an indent where you wish to drill to avoid the bit running off scratching the paintwork, use a nail if no punch.

Trial and error Fraser...using cardboard. Then use a marking device like a Niko and draw a few faint dots to get the alignment.

{USERNAME} wrote: what would be nice if someone with a fairmont unbolted theirs to do some measurements for us!!! The tips on the garnish line up with the crease in the boot above the number plate. As a check I think if you look from inside the boot there is holes to access the bolts of the garnish, I would think that the mounting hole would be centered within the access hole. You will need an 8mm (i think) tube spanner as the studs are too long for a socket. I made one from a piece of aluminium tubing that I bashed an 8mm nut into the end. Don't do what I did and mount it to high as it looks a bit funny.
Cheers TW.

With regards to a template you could try forming one with a thin sheet of plastic and a heat gun on your boot lid
I'd screw the sheet of pastic to your boot lid using the screws for the number plate as this would give you a common reference point on all the boot lids and then form the plastic into shape. Then its just a matter of finding a EL fairmont boot lid so you can mark all the holes for the Garnish and number plate surround. I think that would be the easiest way to get a template as it would hold the shape of the boot lid and line up every time unlike a cardboard template. - I only wished I had thought of this before I attempted the one on my car - with out a template the garnish is a challenge but the EL number plate surround is just a nightmare. I ended up making slotted holes so I could line the garnish and surround up nicely. - good luck!!! |

he i had a thought
put some dabs of water base paint on the bolts/screws on the garnish, line it up at the top at an angle then bring the garnish down till the bolts mark the boot (with the paint) OR get some cardboard, push bolts through and trace garnish outline, cut out and theres yer template
