Hiya everyone ...

Im new to this fourm, my name is Sommer and im from brisbane northside,

I've just bought a NL Fairlane ghia. I got it for a good price, , but it needs a fair bit of tidying up ...

One of the biggest problems I have with it are the headlight lenses, they have gone a yellow colour, what makes this happen???

I've read the doco on how to remove it, and i've done that, (feeling proud to be a gal working on cars) LOL but they have not turned out too great ... a lot better but i'd like to get it perfect ....

If not, does anyone know how much NL head lights are worth? or are they interchange-able with EL ones? or even were to buy them from??

Sorry for all the questions but i've got some mods planned for this car, so I'll prob be asking all the time!!!

Thank you .

Sommer ...

P.S. this site is great!! lots of great info, I think i'll be spending a lot of time on here!!

Hi, Welcome to the site.
EL/EF Fairmonts, Fairlanes, LTD's all have the same headlights. The problem is that the outer lens is polycarbonate (Plastic) not glass and it heats up when the lights are on a discolours over time. Some people use Brasso/Silvo to clean the lens. I used to use powder clenser like Ajax before I fitted my new lights

Welcome to Fordmods!

You can only change the headlights with EF/EL Fairmonts - falcons are a different shape.

The headlights get hot at night and when it rains the plastic lens melts.

That is how they yellow up.

I own an NL and so do many others on this website.

My solution to this homo problem (pending funds) will be to...

1. Buy new headlights
2. Buy a HID kit
3. Buy headlight protectors

I know I've hard of people who have had headlight protectors and don't get the yellowing effect because bits of dirt aren't able to get stuck and build up.

New lights from Ford are around the $350 to $400 mark each.

You can get aftermarket lights that are $160 each, but I wouldn't vouch for their quality.

When I bought my new EL, I ended up buying new lights from Ford. High series headlights when new are F**k good.

thats a pretty bad photo really, was taken when it was getting dark, I'll get another one today to replace it..

I don't wanna spend $400 on new headlights, my excess on insurance is only $350 LOL ;)

But I will stick with what I got for the moment.

Sommer.

My headlight used to be yellowed around the edges of my headlight protectors!! they worked a treat at keeping them clean. 8-)

till someone pulled them off!

The yellowing is not dirt build up or melting plastic. It is purely the UV rays from the sun discolouring the polycarbonate lens. That's why it is on the outside, not inside the lens.

BTW, I've seen plenty of VTs, Astra's and Korean cars with the same problem.

Mike

Spot on as My Mont is left in the shed all day and usually only gets driven at Night and it has not gotten yellow lens. they still look like new just the light output form them is not up to the standard of the new cars that I drive for work.
