when driving at night under a street light, i noticed that the street lights are brighter than my headlights. It is also really annoying when someone is driving behind me because their lights are always brighter than mine and then i cant see the road infront. I was thinking of installing a HID kit but wasn't sure if their legal or not (i've heard so many different stories) anyone know what the actual legallity on HID's are? thanks

I never heard that one.

I have heard that you DO need the UV cut-off etc.

Basically, if they were never fitted to the car from factory, they will never be legal. If you don't go too stupid with them (as in the colour AND the alignment), you shouldn't have an issue. You WILL have to lower your beam if you do a retrofit unless the UV cut-off is fitted. Otherwise, you will end up blinding a lot of drivers.

what is this UV cut-off thing? and yeah ive always hated people with the extra bright lights shining straight in my eyes but seeming as its dangerous with how dim my lights are, im going HIDs

HID kits fitted to a reflector headlight that was designed for halogen bulbs is going to produce unwanted glare for other road users.

Now if you think "I'll just adjust them down so I dont blind everyone", all you will be doing is lighting up the ground right in front of you and any benefit you thought you were getting from a HID kit is well and truly gone as your night distance vision is now reduced thanks to your pupils adjusting to the brightness right in front of your car.

I think there may be some confusion. There is a 'cutoff' (as seen in the picture above) and there is 'UV cut glass'. UV cut glass filters UV radiation.

As has already been said, unless you can design a headlight with a self levelling system with high pressure washer jet and produce a well defined beam pattern and get it ADR approved, then fitting HID's is gunna be illegal.



Are your headlights yellow? Genuine or aftermarket?
Aftermarket headlights are utter garbage, and yellow headlights will destroy your output.
Get some genuine headlights if you dont already, or clean yours if they are, and fit some Narva/phillips/osram 'plus' globes and you'll be sweet. That'll be about the best you'll get without retrofitting in a HID projector. (Still illegal, but works much better than a kit)

hey MAD. thanks for those pics. that really sums up the difference between aftermarket and factory. i think i'll just try and find brighter lights rather than go for those annoying HID kits. I myself get p****d off when im getting blinded.

i run autotecknicafullehsivk bro, HODS yes i said HODS, they arr high output diodes, they are appox 6500k from memory, plug straight into headlight, they are a fatter globe, go further, wider and bright with a nice clean light coming out, improved my lights by almost 2.5x, ill try upload a picture, took before and after pics, oh and only cost $35 for 2 from autowogs bro
