A while ago I put an HID kit on the H1 low beams on my car. It's been working great, and after about 3 months last night was the first time I tried the high beams. Turns out everytime I turn the high beams on the low beams which the HID's are on turn off. Any ideas why?

High beams on? or high beam flash?

They work differently.

If I turn high beams on. I.e. not just momentarily, but on until I move the switch back to the off position.

I think that if I just put them on momentarily then the HID don't turn off, I'll confirm that though.

That sounds like what my EL did.

It's what it's supposed to do. you just won't notice with regular bulbs.

It'll be a rewire job to change that behaviour.

Probably your relay under the bonnet. Had the same problem with my XR.

You need the proper dual high beam set. The normal set will only work as low beams only, turn high beams on and they will turn off. The bi-xenon kit has a relay and a magnet at the back of the globe that changes the position of the globe so it points higher for high beam.

If you want your current set to work with what you have, you need to wire in a resistor(iirc) and plug it into the third pin of the original globe connector if that makes sense.

If I put a wire from the power for the high beams to the power for the low beams with a diode in it, then when the high beams are turned on it will also be supplying power to the low beams. Only risk is if the existing wiring is rated enough to run all the lights.

This is on an XR front end yeah?

I still say you should check that relay. You shouldn't have to rewire or do anything like that. I reckon if you chuck the original globes back in they would do the same thing. It is nothing to do with being HIDs. Whether you are on high beam or low it shouldn't matter the low beams are on all the time.

This is what was happening to my EL XR. Low beam was as normal but as soon as I flicked it to high the lows went out. A $13 relay later and it was all lights on on high.

It's not a proper XR front. It's got Twinlight headlights and a Alan Jones front bar.

I'm still 100% certain that with the normal globes it used to have both the high and low beams on. Because I remember being out of the car looking at it as I had Artic White globes in the low beams and Plus 30's in the High Beam and I was checking out the colour difference.

I replaced the relay not long ago with a Narva unit - I wonder if that's the issue? Maybe it's slightly different or something? I'll try swapping it with the one from my old mans Fairmont and see if that changes anything.

That's the idea, but do it at the relays, that way you're only switch low current (the input/triggers to the relays), and the relays do their job of switching high current.

I assumed from your vehicle thingo that it was an xr6. You will probably have to do what datamine is suggesting. However if it worked with the old globes then it should work with the HIDs it is no different as you would still be using the same wires just with a ballast chucked in there.
