I've got some Crystal Vision globes for my EF which I'm picking up tomorrow.
However, I dropped in at Super Cheap to get some cheapies to tie me over and I saw some 100w H3's and 130w H1's. Obviously these are significantly more powerful than the 55w H1'a and H3's that Mt Ford says to use. Apart from them being illegal, will globes this powerful damage the reflectors in any way? |

I run Blue Vision globes.
I think the biggest problem with higher wattage globes is melting the plastic lenses.

don't get higher wattage bulbs as they create more heat and will damage ur headlight, prorly melt eveythin.

my XF has 100/90's in it when i bought it, and when i went to change the bulbs, the sockets had melted onto the bulbs, and the chrome on the reflectors had been burnt off

Advice taken. I'll stick with 55's and get more lights if I want more light.

Add to that the 100W lamps will keep tripping the circuit breaker, which will reset it self after it cools down. You lights will be on/off/on/off/on/off and so on.

when i have my high beam on it flickers like that?? but i only have standard globes!!

lol my headlights are melted too (well the reflectors) had em apart the other day and found the chrome was all melted off.. hmm im running standard wattage blue kmart type bulbs.. owell cant afford new headlights atm ill live with it

They will stay on for a few seconds, depending on current draw, then stay off for a lot longer. I think your high beam relay is on the way out, like intercepter said, or you have a d**k connection.

Apart, from the lamp holders and lenses burning out, the wiring would be even more of a worry.
Running over 100watts on a 12v supply means you will have a high current draw. So pretty much the original stcok factory wiring is trying to run twice the Current through the conductor, and i can't imagine Ford are nice enouh to run decent wiring or oversized wiring if they have no need to. Dave |

100W @ 12V = 8.3A
100W @ 13.8V = 7.2A 55W @ 12V = 4.6A 55W @ 13.8V = 4A The 18G wire used is capable of 8.8A (I think? the headlight wiring is 18G) so it is pushing the friendship a bit.

Dave I had no trouble running 55/100s & 100w driving lamps in my EA. Had them in there for years. Of couse the EA had glass headlight lenses but the wiring handled it fine and so did the reflectors. I somewhat doubt ford have downgraded the wiring in later models.
