I've noticed on my Fairmont that the ariel doesnt go all the way or down when turning the stero on/off.
I can buy one for about $10 but how hard is it to change it? Do you have to pull the dash out? How do you get access to everything you need to? Last edited by Timmeh on Sat Feb 19, 2005 12:43 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

im not sure about model to model
but basically you have to unscrew the top of arial (the base, on top of car) and open up bonnet/boot or where ever it is located.. hopefully the bonet connect the power wires.. and im not positive about connecting them to stereo... but maybe just follow what the current one does!!! or use its wires (if you can?) $10 is f**k cheap!!!!! at super cheap they are a goood $50

To get to the elec ariel i almost sure you gotta go up from behind the qtr panel; underneath..
Not the easiest of jobs so im told, but i cant say ive done it, only word of mouth.

Im guessing that you take out the inner guard liner on the left fender, and you should be able to get to the aerial bracket from there. Just make sure you fully retract the aerial, otherwise you wont be able to get it out! Oh yeah, and disconnect the aerial plug, lol. Shouldnt take you too long at all man. Have fun! |

Nah it was supercheap where I found it. I'm pretty sure it was a power ariel but I could be mistaken.
Its for an EL Fairmont Ghia where the normal place is for ariels. Left front quarter panel going to the premium sound system. |

Ha ha lol i was just about to ask the same question about a manual aerial!! Coincidence mabe......
Um $10 for a power aerial wow thats dirt cheap i was lookin this morning and it was $80+ from Repco. Ne way you dont need to pull out the dash, to get to everything you need to remove the inner splash shields of the fender on the same side as the aerial (obviously). If your cars low and you have big mags or whateva i think removing the tyre might be easy so you can see wtf your doing. Other than that i really cant say much more as i only have the manual aerial. Good luck thou hope i was of some help to you.

Man those supercheap auto ariels are noisey as, lol!
I installed one in my XF before i got my XR8, made a pretty loud 'whurrr' noise when extending/retracting! But yeah, under your left fender is the way. Yeah it is a bit fidgity.. Turning the wheel fully left also helps access. |

I would just take the wheel off, lol. yeah im pretty sure $10 for an aerial would suggest its not a power aerial, even the cheap nasty ones are like $50+ the ones they sell in Repco are pretty decent, Aeropro i think something like that ne way.

I dont think its $10 unless its a clearance item (i work there )
did you see a big motor next to it then that would suggest it..

I just finished installing my new aerial!!! Only took me about 30 minutes not too bad considering i had to remove the tyre to get to everything.
Looks heaps better you wouldnt think a new aerial would make the car look better.......................but it does

For $10 I'm guessing it's just a replacement mast. I've seen those available. Don't have to change the whole aerial assembly if the mast is snapped.

You dont need to take the wheel off to get into the front left wheel arch
Just park with the wheels at full lock to the right - taking a wheel off does make it a little easier tho. Took me about an hour to do my manual to auto aerial conversion including wiring. FWIW a full auto replacement for manual aerials to suit ef/el cost me 120. I think the semi automatic ones are a little cheaper (the ones to replace std. fairmont power ones?) Manual aerials are dirt cheap from any wrecker.
