I contacted the RTA today, via email, and enquired about hub adaptors.
Below you will see their response. In short, hub adaptors are illegal. Finally this should put an end to all those questions, well for the NSW members anyway. ***************************************************** They said: 'Wheel adapters' are classed the same as 'wheel spacers'. The problem is that a vehicle built to meet the Australian Design Rules, must be fitted with wheels designed for that vehicle. If wheel adapters are used, the wheel isn't an approved type which was designed for that vehicle. Following is the description from the Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Modifications. "the wheel must be one designed for the particular hub/axle in respect to bolt pitch circle diameter and wheel nut tapers. Wheels with slotted stud holes are not permitted;" This is also specified on page 4 of Vehicle Standards Information Sheet No. 9. If you have any other enquiries, don't hesitate to reply or contact Technical Enquiries on 1300 137 302. Regards Colin Lambert **************************************************** Let me guess, someone on here will know better than the RTA????? Technical Enquiries Officer |

That mentions nothing about offset changes, which is what most of us here are on about.
Now if someone wanted an adapter so they could choose from the commo range of wheels, that'd be bad.

Yet again, the difficulties of getting a straight answer from government agencies is highlighted...

That is exactly the same response I got from a Vicroads inspector. The trouble is most of the laws are being aligned with the other states so they will eventually be the same.

that didnt even answer your question, according to that hub adapters are fine, even spacers should be OK, as long as they arent slotted (and id say youd need longer studs.
problem with all the government agencies is that NONE of them even know their own rules, they just cut and paste what it says in the rules.

Your kidding! I think the first 3 lines sum it up quite clearly. Quote: Wheel adapters' are classed the same as 'wheel spacers'. We all know spacers are illegal, so they are puting adaptors in the same basket.Quote: The problem is that a vehicle built to meet the Australian Design Rules, must be fitted with wheels designed for that vehicle. Quote: If wheel adapters are used, the wheel isn't an approved type which was designed for that vehicle.
You will find they are looking for simplicity in the rules so its clear to everyone.

following the DOT's spastic way of thinking, ANY aftermarket wheels (and possibly even optional wheels, like XR wheels on a GLi) are technically illegal..... go figure

Yes, and the last 4 lines go ahead and contradict what Jrandom RTA employee who hasnt really read the rules.
9. Actually, that doesnt even comment on hub adapters, that just says that the wheel has to suit the original stud pattern and wheel nut taper, it DOES NOT mention if there is a lump of steel between the hub and the wheel according to that, you could have a pink elephant in there as long as it had the correct PCD and studs on one side of it.

So 22's in E-series offset should be legal then. |

As long as you dont use adaptors:
Quote: If wheel adapters are used, the wheel isn't an approved type which was designed for that vehicle.
I might fire off an email to QLD DOT |

i think its safe to say, that if you use adapters, you run the risk of being pulled up on it.
even if there is 1 person at the RTA that support the use of them, its the other's that don't that can still get you for it. Basically, its a risk, simple as that. you might wanna consider your insurance too.

i would say not to worry bout being pulled up about them cos cops dont have any idea wat a adaptor looks like you should worry bout insurance because they are ILLEGAL every where we all just wish they were not it also says in the reg books the wheel must bolt to the hub with no spacer of any sort and thats what a hub adaptor does space the dam wheel EVEN THO its called an "ADAPTOR" its primary job is to space its just a better spacer
