They only put an undercoat in the engine bay, wasnt until BA2 did they start putting top coats. (and only on XRs and FPVs)

colour it is a el gli If its a hybrid (post Feb 98) and a prestige colour, chances are it will have a black engine bay from the factory. |

Yep... Under the bonnet too.
But I can also definitely say that when you buy a new bonnet, the underside is painted black as well. What is the build date? And what is the colour? |

It depends on the colour and the time it was built. My AU has a black engine bay, my dads ba has a blueprint engine bay and i've seen other blueprint ba's with black engine bays.

Well, its a hybrid, so it fits into the time frame. Although the Dark Blue isn't a prestige paint. I've seen hybrids of that colour with a body colour engine bay. Must have just been Ford being randomly picky and choosy as to what got painted and what didn't. Prestige paints like Regency, Oxford and Sparkling Burgundy all got black engine bays in the hybrid days. |

no top coat on the AU's bay, so yeah it looks ordinary.
My EL was a hybrid in Amaretto, it had a top-coat free engine bay. Made it look beige instead of the gold colour it should've been. My BF GT-P thankfully is fully finished in the engine bay. The boot however is in primer. But that's ok it's being covered by a flase floor and sound system.
