the wrong key won't turn the barrel. You need a key cut to fit the lock. The BEM only learns the keypad. The ignition barrel, while part of smartlock, relies on the key being able to turn in the lock before it'll signal the BEM to signal the ECU to go.
Wrong cut key = nothing programming key = no such thing (key must match barrel. simple.) programming ignition barrel = 1 hr wait (I've done this)

when i changed my bem, i had to leave my key in the ignition for 40 minutes
i could turn the key and everything but nothing happened... right cut key... but wasnt programed for that bem

It was my understanding that from AU upwards the keys were programmed, as well as the remotes.
For the EBII to AU it was just the remotes that were programmed to unlock and disable smartlock. The keys had no programming at all. I have done all this for my ED, new keys and remotes and I programmed the remotes myself and got the keys cut but the locksmith at work. |

Lol, the EF/EL keys are just a piece of metal, what part of it are you programing?

ok i think i get you now yeah the key itself has very little to do with smartlock. The barrel has smartlock circuitry in it, that is only activated when the key is turned to the ON (II) position. Of course you can only turn the key if it's cut right. When teh key is turned to ON, the barrel sends coded signals to the BEM, which if it likes 2 out of 3 of them, will send a diff signal to the ECU to allow the car to start/run. If you change BEM's or barrels (like I did), you need to get the BEM to relearn. (BTW: I added a second barrel/key so I can get remote start on my alarm to work).

I don't know about AU onward but those funny looking sort of round shafted keys are for Tibbe locks - they are definitely one key- one lock BUT I have read somewhere that any Tibbe key will LOCK any Tibbe lock, but will only UNlock it's own lock.
When you think about it, this means I guess that any Tibbe key will turn any Tibbe ignition lock in the start direction! That may be where people are thinking that only the remote dongle programming is what secures the car (which in the case of ignition may well be the case!) Again, if that's true about any key turning any lock in the locked direction, then I guess it does mean that as long as you use the remote for locking/unlocking doors then you could use ANY key for the ignition (as long as you have the remote unit that's programmed for the car).

didnt some one say au/ba keys are programable... so whats so funny about ef/l i thought there could have been some kind of small chip or something in the black bit of the key...

a tibbe key will lock ANY tibbe lock ONLY the key for the lock will operate the lock (doesn't matter if it is door or ign) oh and btw 1 in about every 50,000 key is the same. Now on the REAL point of the topic. You do not need a blank key from ford for an EF. I have had mine cut by the locksmiths at the market for $5 and that was including the key
