a tibbe key will lock ANY tibbe lock ONLY the key for the lock will operate the lock (doesn't matter if it is door or ign) oh and btw 1 in about every 50,000 key is the same. Now on the REAL point of the topic. You do not need a blank key from ford for an EF. I have had mine cut by the locksmiths at the market for $5 and that was including the key Hey! - check a couple of posts up buddy - the guy PROVED you can LOCK ANY DOORLOCK with ANY key!!! (correct key is needed to unlock tho). The ignition lock evidently must have the right key - which makes sense - I was only supposing it might be like the doorlocks because it's clockwise to lock the doors and clockwise to operate the ignition.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the AU/BA keys use a 'transducer', which needs no battery, as the signal sent by the car (ignition barrel) is enough to provide power to the chip which responds with the code. Again it's the BEM (smartlock / smartshield) that learns, not the key/remote.

Okay guys, I'm a locksmith. EF-EL right key in the ignition and it's all good. AU onwards and even if you have the right key it will turn but she won't go. You need to get the transponder chip inside the key programmed to the BEM.
$33 for the key and about $99 for programming. AU Series I are a pain in the butt and AU Series II from may 99 are fine. BA isn't to bad. Although sometimes it just dosn't want to work. Will do better price for any fordmods member in Melbourne. Hoped this may have helped.

All keys need to be cut, doesn't matter what model, if you need a second key, the blank must be cut to the original.
PS is not available at every locksmith etc, but they do charge from 20 - 50 depending on who and where does it Regards Ian

EA-AU1is the older thinner tibbe, AU1.5-BA mk2 is the thicker headded tibbes. Smartlock and smartshield are both different. And btw, the transmitter in the thicker heads are activated by a electrical shock, sending the codes |

And the point of what I was saying is that with any car up to AU1, you can use ANY KEY to LOCK THE DOORS on any car!!!
That was a significant point at the time for me because at the time I had been living in Broome where every other person used to pull up at the atm and leave their car running while they went to the machine - I never did ever lock any sucker outta their car but was sorely tempted on many occasions - especially when I was on my way to the damned machine myself and had done the RIGHT thing and parked in the carpark instead of just zipping in and leaving the car running in the no standing zone next to the ATM (said bozos would then spend 5 minutes doing f^&% knows what at the machine - ie. never just a quickie cash withdrawal - gave me plenty of time to ponder wandering over and locking their ^%$king cars when they were Falcons...) I recently got a new ignition barrel + doorlocks set for my EF - but it didn't include a boot lock - so I pulled one of the new door barrels apart to work out the disc pattern then put together a matching set of discs (using some from the old locks) for the bootlock barrel to make the boot work with the new keys. My point? - to comhelp if he's still around: I have some working knowledge of how tibbe locks work - ppppffffttt!! And as far as post mining goes - I never realised information had a shelflife...

I say again - I had no idea information had a shelflife. People nowadays have more technology but are less capable - they have greater awareness yet are PERSONALLY as individuals more ignorant than ever - and have more history to draw on than ever (kind of a natural truth there - ie. time passing IS history) - yet they are less broad minded and tolerant than ever. JESUS! - Beam me up scotty!!!
To make it simple - IMO one of the greatest things about the kind of facility we have with the internet / www / etc. and forums like this is that it makes time - something that otherwise along with distance has always hindered the interchange of ideas and easy communication - IRRELEVANT... But there's always small minded morons who crawl out of the woodwork - cave man might have the latest smart phone but he's still a f&^%ing cave man I guess...
