No not my car, thank god!
My missus has a festiva, metallic burgendy colour (haven't gotten around to looking up the paint code yet) and she managed to scrape it pretty good down the side. The plastic strip around the middle took most of the damage but there's a bit of metal thats a bit mashed in and has the paint off. Anyway I'll bog it up no worries, BUT, I've never done little touch ups like this before on a metallic coloured car. Can I just buy a can of clear and a can of the right colour or does it have to be done in layers with a base coat ? Mine has a black base coat then the metallic tint over the top, but I'm hoping this isn't as involved and I can largely just spray it on straight out of the can. The car is a bit of a s**t but with little dings and scratches all over it but I don't want the job to look like complete a** Anyone had any relevant experience ?

if you look in the books at supercheap or autobarn it will specify the primer colour, i have to use some orange s**t first then cardinal red. Good luck matching the colours its gonna be pretty obvious that its been touched up

I went to supercheap today, had a look and they didn't seem to have the right paint (paint code BF, that ones easy to remember )
Thanks for the input Jose, it does look similar to cardinal red so chances are I'll need a base coat like that. Argh, this could end up looking messy... Stay tuned for a phantom mica festiva Eb guy, with mine it's actually a black base with a purple tint over the top. Over the black base it comes out as a deep dark purple, but over a grey primer base it comes out alot lighter purple - a real pastelly girly colour. It's kinda like candy apple red where they put down a silver base and a red coloured tint to get that deep colour

Yep!
If you're going to use a proper spray gun get "high grade" clear. Apparently there's different grades and the more expensive high grades give a better finish

It wont need a base coat you can just spray straight over the top , base coats are only for 3 layer pearls and candys and if you want your top coat to cover better.

Try Repco, or Auto One, they carry different brands of paint to Supercheap.

Not true, my monaro has a yellow base coat, followed by an orange top coat, to end up as sunset mandarin. its pretty obvious as the painter who repainted the car has left patches where he missed with the top coat... And its certainly not a pearl or a candy
