it works fine where it is, but if you were looking at welding the original place up for a cleaner look, then i have seen them moved to inside the boot in some weird and wonderful places

nah but the car im definatly thinking of that was modified was a holden vk and instead of having the normal fuel filler it had it just below the back window in the right hand corner where the boot shuts and its hidden,

One of the difficulties involved with say anea, maybe, ef onwards atleast, is the fact that you have a moulded plastic tank with a one piece filler neck, e.g. can't exactly get an extended elbow for the filer neck, sure anything possible, but not gonna be easy, my personal thought, would be to even look at redo the floor pan with a custom tank.
I definitely like your thinking, I like my wagons, and always felt envious of that issue. more sol like my 59 wags has it on the side, a sedan, has it below the bootlid, sure tempts me to do something with the numberplate.

maybe if you were going straight gas and doing away with petrol all together it would be easy because you could either have a small filler hole in the side and weld the fuel filler spot up or hide the gas one in a different out of the way place all together, this commodore i seen it on was straight gas, but ive also seen it moved on early cars with petrol
