paint care is something that has to be done from factory, there's only so much you can do if it's been neglected.

Try a mild cut polish, and then a good quality polish, then 2/3 layers of wax. Should make it much better, but that XR looks tops!

I recommend the Meguairs range.

Here's my car in 'normal' finish:

And in show'n'shine finish:

(This is a week of cleaning and shining).

Mate, i think its one of the things that needs to be looked after since new, or have resprayed to get that look..
Did you ever see my heritage green fairlane sportsman?
It honestly had some of the nicest heritage green paint ive ever seen, might throw up a pic or two for ya!
To try n clean the crap off the bottom maybe try tar remover from autho stores, its stuff that sticks to the paint n is BLOODY hard to get off, very often most people will just ignore it unfortunetly n can ruin the paint work.
Failing that buy a block of "detailing clay" from the auto store, i used to use this and itd clean any of my paint to glass finish, awesome stuff!!!
You might be able to get a good detailer to come to your house to revive your paint somewhat, not sure how good a job they do, but im sure with a good day or something you could do the same, wash, clay/tar remover, wash again if needed, quick dry, cut polish, polish, good quality wax..
Good luck with it!

It's not so much the shine, but the paint quality/colour. And for shine, check the boot.

I only used a mild cut, as my paint has always been looked after, just needs a freshen up now and again.

@Daniel
Is that suposed to be green  looks black to me.

Yer heritage green, what it looked like from showroom, dark as, heritage green lightens with sun exposure i swear.. you see some getting around light as then see some with nice paint n dark shade, then some with resprays look dark as too.
Guys who have been to the fordmods meets in the past n seen it have often commented on how dark/shiney it looked, wish was easy to get that finish on all colours.

or is that because of bad care of the paint job?

Man those pictures make me want to get mine spray (even change from poly to heritage green!).

Mine was apparantly garaged always, which makes sense as the paint is in good condition, just it has heaps of scratches and chips all over the place (plus a tiny dent or two).

When I was polishing 2 or so weeks ago it actually started to rain towards the end. Will have to do it again soon.

I suffer the same problem in my Poly green ED. i wash it, then 10 mins later it is dirty again (gets left outside all the time, no room for it undercover  )
So basically i gave up, as the car needs a good respray as it has alot of scratches from the previous owner.
