Just wondering if you can still get EL panels mainly front bumper, bonnet, grille and headlights
for a EL fairmont? It's after 5pm so I can't call them to check.. I ask this because after getting a smash repair quote they are using all used parts to repair the car.. I thought it would be a case of new parts? I haven't had to deal with a insurance repair for a long, long time so I am not exactly sure.. Thanks in advance. EDIT- {DESCRIPTION} Ok I just saw this site with new genuine parts so I ask is the norm for insurance companies to allow used parts by the smash repairer to fix your car? |

EDIT- {DESCRIPTION} Ok I just saw this site with new genuine parts so I ask is the norm for insurance companies to allow used parts by the smash repairer to fix your car? As far as I know, EL parts are becoming increasingly rare to find new, not to mention parts are most likely obsolete...especially front/rear bumpers due to high damage rate. So if you go to Ford and request one, most likely you'll get a no. Car repairers will most likely use second hand parts if they are very hard to find or obsolete. I bet you some smash repairers use second hand parts but quote new parts and get paid out more. That's what happened to me, they quoted me $2000 to fix my front end (EL Fairmont) with a spare front bar they supplied...instead they just reused my old one and charged the bill to the insurer. Not to mention it was a pretty dodgy job...but I didn't care since I just wanted my car back. Never taking my car there again even if it's VACC approved....

bumpers are still available, as are the headlights, bonnet i think is still available and the grilles are available but not for too long as a lot of the part numbers are becoming obsolete, and the grilles are extremely expensive.

Have a look at what your policy states regarding parts. Most will not state you will get new parts. You'll get parts comensurate with the age and standard of your vehicle. It's generally new because second hand are hard to find and more expensive to prepare.
I don't think alot of the front end bits and pieces are available. I remember bumpers and grills being NLA a few years back. Unless specific dealers have the parts in their storeroom. Also remember the parts you listed would be between $2000 and $2500 new, before labour and painting costs. Going second hand might be the only way it got via inurance. |

The main reason that NEW parts for old cars are NOT used much is that they are just too expensive for them.
Front Rad support panel EF F10922 A $279.00 Lower Tie rail EF F110L76 A $206.85 O/S inner skirt EF 16044 A $192.00 N/S inner skirt EF 16045 A $192.00 O/S guard EF 16005 A $191.00 N/S guard EF 16006 A $191.00 Bonnet EL 16612 A $418.00 Front Bar EL 17750 A $231.00 O/S headlight EL 13005 AL $279.00 N/S headlight EL 13006 AL $279.00 O/S flasher lamp EF 13368 B $100.30 N/S flasher lamp EF 13369 B $100.30 From the prices you can see WHY insurance companies won't allow NEW stuff. Panel beaters are forced to use second hand and shoddy after market parts to repair cars that are only 4 and 5 years old so older cars have NO hope. |

Although it depends quite often aftermarket panels are getting cheaper than second hand, when you can sell indicators for 25 aftermarket retail.... guards like 30 odd bucks trade etc. it's hard to fathem.
Yes a lot of panel beaters work they're quotes to suit, but quite often make the decision at the time.

The strange thing is the approved insurance quote is for $2700 and the car is insured for $3000
and they are going to repair it... |

Usually they will use what they can get their hands on to repair your car with. I got a brand new tail gate fit to my 1986 suzuki mighty boy because a new one was available and much easier to get than second hand.
When my EB Ghia was repaired, second hand tail lights & garnish were fit to it, and my rear bar was repaired, altho they did a s**t job at the repair! The second hand units only cost about $100 from a wrecker, but I wouldn't be surprised if they charged the insurance company for new parts anyway. Cheers ToranaGuy
