I wanted to ask a q that i have been using a 2mm gun which i was told is mainly for primer so what guns are everyone using as im thinking of applying clear coat on my colour sanded panels. I understand without clear, i will continually have to buff or wax the car to keep the colour from fading and looking dull. I guess with clear coat it will give me extra protection and more of a deeper glossier look hence what gun is best required for this work...

use the same gun--you have just gotton used it.readjust it to suit the clear.

I normally use a 1.8 gun but if you are used to the 2.0 use that one....

Not a good idea to clear coat any colour sanded surfaces. the clear would probably de-laminate over a short time since the base coat is like a mirror finish already.

The only reason why i want to add clear coat is cause i want a deeper shinier look and better protection as buffing will fade and only last soo long before it starts to become dull again? |

is that colour a metallic?
i thought your not supposed to colour sand metallics, only after the clear has been applied |

Oh f**k......   Newbie mistake number 1.... never buff and polish a surface that still needs to be painted..... Ok to colour sand and then add clear but dont buff the car or add polish... 99% of car polishes contain wax......

I personally try not too but I can sand down if rough and add a final coat before I start adding clear.... Usually I start painting and dont finish til its all done unless I have a drama that is and have to colour sand back rough spots or runs... then I let it dry and do a top coat the next day and clear....

Wipe the wax off thoroughly then sand it back with 800-1000 until all the shine is gone,,, but all that depends on how much paint is left over from the colour sanding previously.
As AU99 has said before, spray another base coat and then clear the next day. probably a decent amount of clear anyway, 3 to 5 coats. the beauty with that is you can cut the clear back to a mirror finish as you did previously with the colour sanding.

I think i have misunderstood being a newbie to painting... This is what i have been doing... Sand back original paint till flat... Prepsol Apply 3 coats of colour and then 2 coats of clear straight after then sand back till flat then buff and polish I think the mistake that ive been doing is adding clear staright after colour spraying and then sanding? What i should have done was after applying colour was to sand back then add clear coat?? Some guys have suggested that add colour then clear then sand and buff which works but im just worried that it might fade over time as the only think keeping it safe and shiny is the buff and polish? Oh well, ill sand it back in the near future and add clear.. thanks for your help guys...
