After a recent hail storm that dinted my bonnet I have been collecting bits for a EL fairmont front conversion. I have all the bits now but after a $1k quote to spray I have decided to DIY, as I have not sprayed automotive paints for a fair while I am after some advise. The main thing I need to know is the paint type I need, I assume it is acrylic with a clear coat. Supercheap have acrylic primer and thinners at a good price, is the quality of this stuff OK? I was concidering 2 pak but don't think my spray equipment is consistent enough for a blemish free finish. Any help appreciated.

Cheers TW. dont do 2pac otherwise u will see every blemish. i just did my cars front bumper and bonnet (acrylic) and it came out well except for a few paint lines u can see at diff angles. go to a good paint store to get your paint and other stuff ,it might be dearer but it will be better. p.s try and do it inside on a hot day cheers

Your cars original paint is 2 pack
Problems with using acrylic is, mismatch in shine, paint shrinkage around repairs (bog). Needs cutting back afterwards. Problems with 2 pack, takes to long to dry for the home panel beater, leads to dust, insect etc sticking in paint. Requires spray booth. Poisonous fumes. Advantages of 2 pack, hard wearing paint, better shine, better matching of colour. A great finish straight of the gun - no need to cut back.

Thanks Mad Max, I don't think the mismatched shine will be an issue with mine, really the whole car needs re-doing but I think I can get by with acrylic this time around for the bonnet and bar. There are no major repairs to be done to either parts except the obligitory scraps under the bar. Cheers TW.

DONT EVER USE SUPERCHEAP STUFF!!!! it comes out crap, i have had mates that have used it, the premium thinners is ok, but the clear coat is a waste of time, its only shiny on the edges, and just doesnt seem to work properly. buts thats my experiance, you are better off going to fyshwick and the paint shop down the road from supercheap is very good for both paint/ thinners clears etc and he is not too bad on price either. and he also knows his stuff and is more then happy to answer questions.

cheers John i can vouch for the supercheap stuff being crap too. teribble finish. my mate who can spray half decently couldnt even get a nice finish with it. the better quality materials you can get the better the finished product will be. alot also comes down to good preperation but.

OK, Point noted with supercheap, I might use them for the wet and dry and prepsol. How about AutoBarn, the one in Belconnen mix paint @ $150 per 4 litres for acrylic ( is that a fair price) and there of the shelf primers and thinners are only marginally dearer. Also they have a premium gloss thinners what is this stuff like? Cheers TW.

go to a dedicated paint shop not a autobarn or supercrap,go somewhere where they specialise in paints not floor mats.
what are you painting? i only needed half a litre for my bonnet and front bumper

what are you painting? i only needed half a litre for my bonnet and front bumper Cool I am doing the same, a litre should cover it then. I was planning some other touch up work as well in the future and thought it best to get the paint as one batch. Cheers TW.
