what cost would be involved in spraying the engine cover of an EL XR8 ? The one thats the top half like metal and the bottom plastic ? Nothing fancy just a nice coat of navy blue to match the car ?

Remove it. Tape up the bits you dont want to be sprayed with paint. Clean up the cover - sand it back if it needs it. Buy some hi temperature paint, spray on a couple coats. Let it dry. Put back on car. easy.

i gather youre talking about the VHT paint you can buy at like repco ?
Will this stuff last tho ? I don't want to fudge up my cover !!! thanks to a hot engine!  What do I do with the metal bit top half does or can that be sanded or is that just need of a pre painting clean ? with some sort of product ?

You wont wreck the Engine Cover, cause most of that VHT paint is rated to something like 1500 degress C. Or some stupid figure like that.
It doesnt bubble and run even on brake pads, so it wont do it on your engine cover |

It actually recommends putting them back on after they are touch dry and then taking your car for a run to "bake" the paint with the hot engine.

I've been thinking about doing my rocker cover (I6) in body colour, will it 'do' (i.e. temp wise) or will only VHT paint suffice (thus not available in anything close to my colour)

I'm getting my car resprayed in a couple of weeks, is there something I can add to the body paint to make it stand up to the higher under-bonnet temps?
If I can it'd be the perfect chance to get it done in the same colour if I removed the engine cover and took it in loose...

I'm not sure if your body colour paint will be heat resistant enough for the rocker cover. I'm sure some guys would have done it before, but i personally wouldn't try it myself, i guess if it starts to bubble, crack and fade it you know it doesn't work well, and then shouldn't be too hard to remove. But its a bit pointless trying a trial and error.
I'm sure there would be something you may be able to add to your paint to heat shield it a bit more. It may be better to just get some good heat shield fabric stuff for under the bonnet, or spray some liquid heat shield underneath the bonnet as well. If you mix any sort of stuff in with the paint, it will probably discolour it a little, i would think. |

If you sprayed it with the VHT first then the body paint. Would that be ok

For the rocker cover it may or may not work. The paint may not stick as well to the rocker cover once it already has VHT on it, it may run easier when it gets hot i would imagine. Cause the rocker cover will still get really hot and the VHT wont stop that at all, the normal paint could still possibly run or fade. The heat just obviously doesnt affect VHT like normal paint.
I'm still guessing you could try normal paint, but it might be a pain in the a*** if it stuffs up on you. |

2 pak paint is fine on motors, it is heat resistant but not like the vht stuff

ahah.. well i mite attempt it seeing as according to the sparco website VHT do a FOrd specific dark blue.. mite have to have a looksie.. altho ive grown fond of the bare naked windsor staring at me.. just hate that bit atop the manifold where the 5lt V8 plaque is on AU's !! that the cover used to screw on... to bad they dont exist these days!
