last night the cops pulled me over and started complaining about my car being to low, I bought it already lowered and had it checked out, the springs are proper ones that haven't be cut. They measured it and decided that my back ones were within limit but they wanted me to get them raised, and my front ones were 30mm to low and I would have to get them fixed. They threatened a defect but decided against it, they also told me that myt tinted windows were to dark. Does anyone know the specifications for ride height and how tinted can my windows be and how do they tell?

Vic roads says that it must be 100mm or 110mm off the ground at the lowest point of the car and tint no darker than 35%

Not sure what it would be in SA, I'd ring up the SARoads (if there is one)

Thread moved. Let's not turn this into a cop bashing affair :)

From the Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Rules 1999 from the Parliament of SA... part 7.. division 2:

73—Ground clearance

(1) In this rule:

ground clearance, of a vehicle, means the minimum distance to the ground from a point on the underside of the vehicle, except a point on a tyre, wheel, wheel hub, brake backing plate or flexible mudguard or mudflap of the vehicle.

(2) A motor vehicle or combination must have a ground clearance of:
(a) at least 100 millimetres at any point within 1 metre of an axle; and
(b) at least one‑thirtieth of the distance between the centres of adjacent axles at the midpoint between them; and
(c) at any other point—at least the distance that allows the vehicle or combination to pass over a peak in the road with a gradient on either side of 1:15, if the wheels of 1 axle of the vehicle or combination are on the slope on one side of the peak and the wheels of the next axle are on the slope on the other side.

Distance from hub centre to guard sounds bs! to me,When I was pulled up in goulburn the cops pulled out a 100mm wooden block and went around under the car but only to the lowest point under the car which is the xzorst.I ended up getting a defect for insussicent xzorst ground clearance.

Yeah centre of wheel to top of guard, someone explain that to me? sounds like utter s**t to me. Glad I live in the country only time I've been harassed was when i went through a roundabout and then booted it to see a copper with a Breathalyser, at the time I didn't have a side indicator and an outside edge was warn on my tyre, got a pretty yellow sticker :)

meh tell them that it is XR spec suspension and was dealler fitted when the car was bought and stick to the story

cops know jack s**t about cars and the ADR's that go with them, the only ppl that know for sure are the pit inspectors

Cops don't need to know anything about cars, they only need to think its wrong. Once they defect a vehicle its up to the owner to prove its roadworthy.

Exaaactly.
You could have a car that's perfectly legal, and if a not-nice cop has either had a really bad day, or you are being a smartass and he's got a short fues, they will defect you for anything they can think of.
So be nice!

seeing as we are talking about defects atm, i have a pod that is a air-box, but a hole in the airbox, so you can see the pod, (see gallery) the police said that it was illeagal, i just said that it was mounted ridgedly and not going any where. they had a chat to me and eventualy let me go even for ride height (im under). what are the laws on fitment of podfilters. (im in vic if that helps)

P.S. i find that if you conduct yourself calmly/respectfully around them they are cool with mods, unless they are stupid

Yep, SA cops like to measure the Eyebrow height. I got pulled over for being too low, but was let off as I was 2-3mm above the limit *phew*.

For an EF/EL, the eyebrow height must be 337mm or higher. This is what I saw in the cops book as he was looking up my car.

The car must be "fully loaded".
