Most probably is to do with the intake noise, but when you think about it that extra tube holds a pocket of air like a reserve as well.....

? how is that going to get into the tb any faster than air from the bigger pipe? the air in both is comming from the air box and it is a longer run through the extra tube, not that i know anything about the reason its actualy there

sheesh I'm trying to polish my intake at the moment...it takes a fair effort...but i am starting with a 120...should have gone 80 =(...so yeah start with a 80 grit paper ...will make your life easier. It will be a long and enduring task...took em about an hour or so to do just one out of the 6 intakes to smoothness...so about 6 hours with a 120 grit to do all and not to mention the little bits and pieces in between.

I wouldnt do it with 80 grit, yeah might get the casting off, but in turn leave you with deeper lines that you still have to sand out.
I found, 120 grit works fine to get the dimples out. Then go over it really good with 320 grit. Then 800, then 1200 (or 1500) Then autosol 4 or 5 times over will bring it up nice. Each step of sanding is very important as you will have lines left in the end if you dont be thorough with each step |

At the end of rubbing it down with grit paper then polishing the intake, You should do a blister count....I reckon you'd end up with a hand full of the bastards.
