Hey guys, is there any secrets to re fitting the side rear windows on a wagon, I've had a few attempts but always get leaks.
I noticed when taking off for the first time they had double sided foam tape, is this needed? |

Are you talking about the glass itself, that sits between the C & D pillars ??

The rear glass on either side of the 'wagon' bit. So the 2 big side glass that go from back door to back of car.

You do need to apply a lot of urethane to the top of the glass, and the rubber/plastic fascia fitted to the top when you fit it - the back section that runs down the D pillar, leave hanging, so you can check the seal, then you can pop rivet it once the urethane is set and leak checked.
Add a decent amount to the back section too, as not enough gives you plenty of leaks - learn't that too. The leading edge and bottom aren't that critical, as water runs away from them, but they're easy to touch up seal later if need be. I fitted the glass dry first, matched fit, put some masking tape with creep marks on the glass and body, so that I could fit it with the urethane without having to move it around to fit. Don't forget the two rubber wedges that sit at the bottom of the glass - you might want to urethane them first, and let it set so they stay anchored when the glass sits on them. Yeah, I scraped the foam off - don't think it's that critical. Urethane is wonderful on hands - what type of urethane are you using ??

The foam tape serves 2 purposes 1 to stop the sealant going everywhere 2 to control how far you push the window in , You can use the primer to set the plastis spacer blocks, you can buy the 3M nozzles that control how high you apply sealer to the glass if you have not done it before usually 10mm wide with a 10mm peak should do the job, start at the bottom centre of glass and finish the same

Cheers guys, once I get some paint on the wagon I'll give it a blast.
I think I'l use the double sided foam tape. BTW do I just run the 10mm high line against the tape/body ? Or do I want a gap between the two? |

Not all urethanes are equal - is it approved for use on windscreens ?? It's a structural bond. Are you using the primer as mentioned earlier ?? There is an activator also, but I think any cleaner that doesn't leave residue may suit. Best to check with a windscreen place - they obviously know what they're doing - I've found places like Bunning's and some part's places to not have much idea, and have offered me info that was wrong. Also, if you can borrow a ford shop manual - may be any of the E series or XG/XH utes, etc - the section on windscreens, etc is pretty good on info how to remove/install glass, prepwork, application of urethane, etc.

Sikaflex 227 is not for use on windscreens, or fixed glass.
