despite what Uglybob will tell you - the bumper needs to come off before you take the lights off. At least that is what bothe the Gregory's and Ford Factory manuals will tell you. It is also what I did when I took my EF GLI lights off recently.
How Uglybob got them out I have no idea.....

ive removed my headlights in my ef a few times without removing the bumper. i know the ford manual say to remvoe ti but if your gentle u can get it past the bumper by pushing the top the bumper down and coaxing the head light out. good luck with it
