The proper way is to cut the area out in a nice uniform shape and weld in a new piece.

The way everyone else does it is to first grind the area back to bare metal. Leave NO black or brown rust spots. It should all look very shiny. Grind back at least 2 cm around the rust affected area. Treat the entire area front and back with a rust killer agent.

If the hole is big (greater than say 2cm) you will need to reinforce the hole or the bog will crack and seperate from the body. Best to use some fibre glass here. Bend the edges of the hole inward so that the glass will sit below the surface of the surrounding body work. When the glass is dry give it all a good sand to prepare for the bog.

Apply the bog in thin layers. Let dry and sand between applications. The best way to tell if it is all smooth and will look good it to paint the bog with a light coat of red or black spray paint and then sand lightly. You will quickly see any high or low spots.

Once you are happy sand with a fine paper and paint. Use undercoat to help seal everything.

If you take any breaks or more than a day you will need to paint the area with undercoat/sealer to prevent any more rust forming.

cheers
Scott

Yep. You will probably find that to get rid of all traces of rust you will end up with some perforations. It is inevitable. It is SO VERY important to get rid of every trace of rust whether red, brown, black, unless it is shiny grind it away. otherwise you will get rust coming back through in 6 months time.

cheers
