spent a couple hours on it today:
got the trusty angle grinder out and went wild on the skin where its gonna be fibreglassed. you wanna do this step properly as this will determine how well the 'glass sticks to the metal (ie: cracks showing or not later). make sure all the paint is gone and the metal is rough. then mix up some resin and paint it on where you want the glass to go. about 4-5 inches wide is ok (100-125mm). place the 'glass on the wet resin and paint another layer of resin over the top. leave in the sun to dry. here's one i prepared earlier:

just applied another layer of fibreglass. this time i cut the strips of fibre thinner, so the transition is gradual from bonnet to bulge. next step filing down any rough spots in the 'glass and applying bodyfiller ready for smoothing to the final shape. no photos because it looks exactly like it did in the last photo.

Awesome work fordriver1 I've always wondered how fibreglassing was done particular with installing the bulge.

spent a bit more time on the bonnet over the last couple of days.
got the orbital sander on it with 60 grit sand paper to get the high spots down on the fibreglass. this took a while but would have been quicker with a quick file, if you can get hold of one. this is what it looked like with the 'glass to basic shape: then started applying body filler. make it a thin as you can to get the shape you want as you will regret all the extra sanding if you happen to put it on too thick (like i did). my neighbour came to the rescue by letting me borrow a speed file to take the body filler down to shape. this was by far quicker than an orbital sander. after a couple of hours shaping and sanding, the bonnet is at the best i will get it myself, so the next step is getting it to the paint shop to have them finish the prep and paint it to match the car.

You've done this a few times before?
You make it look easy, its almost tempting to try it myself only to bugger it up . Did you sand back the paint before putting the bog down? looks like you bogged it over the top of the paint. |

I definitely have to see your car in the flesh one day mate.
It's one of a kind. Will be interested to see how this turns out. It's another thing that's been on my list for a while. I've just been a bit scared of doing it...
