Hi all
Have recently bought a 96 EF Fairmont with dodgy paint on the boot as below: I was looking at cutting compounds (Kitten brand) but they say not to use them on metallic paint. So, what options have I got for hand cutting the bootlid (I do not have a rotary doohikie) to restore the paint to a reasonable condition? Paint code is N9. Cheers RD

Hello there,
Have you considered having a professional detailer do paint rectification. If you want I can recommend a guy that does a great job - leaves the paintwork looking like crystal. I use him and he has never disappointed me with the finish on the car. He has a detail with paint rectification that will set you back $485, but it is worth it. |

u dont really need a specific polish for metallics. metallics are clear coated so dont go rubbing too hard as u'll end up going thru the clear. i use meguiars gear and have had no problems.
after cutting it back a little use a finer polish then wax. |

Thanks guys
elusiverunner: while it would be nice to have that done the dollars are just not there for that sort of thing. Besides, the car was bought for $450.00 elf100capri: thanks for the info, I'll check out what Supercheap has in the way of Meguires stuff. Cheers RD

get the deep crystal system polish (step 2), and wet look cleaner wax.
u may need some cut / polish but just go easy with it. meguiars gear needs machine to compound cut it. use kitten etc. u should get polish , wax , cut under $50 from sca. also use old soft t-shirts. |

Its hard to tell from the photo, but is any paint actually missing, or has it just gone dull?
I had a Mocha Foam colour EF before this, did a similar thing with the bootlid. It was dull, and some paint was burnt off. The dull sections came up mint, but if there is paint gone, those sections obviously cannot be saved. I used a crap electric polisher and meguiars medium cut cleaner. Worked mint. Try that, should cost f**k all. Good luck RD |

Paint has just gone dull. I would have expected the same on the roof but it is fine. Will try the Meguiars route once I have the engine in, might as well find out if I really need to repaint or replace.
Cheers RD

Went to Supercheap today to check out what they had. At the moment they have a couple of polishers that I am considering.
One is like a big angle grinder @ $89.99 and the other is like a big orbital sander, upright with 2 handles @ $49.99. Which would be better suited to my task of paint restoring? Cheers RD

both will work as long as they spin. the lambswool pads are probably cheapies though.(read wont last) think sca sell black diamond brand pads that perform much like 3m ones but are half the price. ive been using them the last 5 years. the bigger one would be the go but make sure it has variable speed otherwise u might end up with buff burns to contend with. there are quite a few different buff around at the moment, think repco has one in that price range aswell.
i paid $230 for mine 10 years ago (makita variable speed) and is still going strong, heard they are close on $400 for same now.

Excellent, thanks for the info. I will check out the machines for "variableness" next time I am up there and go have a gander at Repco too. I know the way it usually goes is that you get what you pay for but I probably wouldn't be doing this very often so a GMC type brand product will probably do me fine for a few years.
Cheers RD

Far out, so GMC is down the creek (or thats how I read your reply ) Strange as I thought that the home handyman market would be fairly strong. I have a few GMC products myself and that rarely get used. Not bad items for the price.
