i was driving past a skyline GT-R today, with one, and i thought to myself, i hope the pricks dies, then i thought of ways he could die i kow sadistic... but that led to me thinking, on how they would perform in a strenght test. could someone please enlighten me please cheers

Ricer bonnets? Are you talking about carbon fiber bonnets?
Personally I see nothing wrong with them, they're a s**t load lighter. And it's only ricey if you don't paint them (there's nothing stopping anyone from painting them so they match the rest of the car). Some mobs just do fiberglass ones, also lighter, and cheaper than carbon fiber. The bonnet doesn't have much to do with the structural strength of the front of the car, so in that sense it's no different at alL! main difference that'll be effective in a crash is your sheet metal bonnet with bend/fold/scrunch, were your fiber bonnets will shatter and break off (these could damage anyone around the accident or you if your front windscreen smashed or soemthing). |

arent carbon fibre ones illegal for that fact? because in an accident they will shatter sending spliters everywhere?

That'd more than likely be a state dependent law... |

I'd buy one in a flash if they were available for our cars

Carbon Fibre bonnets are illegal in NSW due to the fact there is no structural bracing (frame work) under them so when you hit a pedestrian they break and yes shatter.

now now greyskull, ya shouldn't be thinking of ways for people to die just because they have a carbon fibre bonnet.... if they drove a 202 six Holden Torana with SLR 5000 written on the sides with "HSV i just want one" stickers on the window and cut you off, then thats a different story

not exactly southy...
the standard bonnet is actually designed with special creases to fold when head head on, as to fold up and crumple so it reduces the chance of bits flying off. a carbon fibre bonnet in a collision will shatter sending thousands of shards of carbon fibre everywhere. very dangerous for by standers

Yeah, thats the answers i was looking for!!
I realised that the bonnet doesnt have much structual impact on the car, but iwas just wondering how they would go if they did get folded and bent. And reckon they damn well should be banned if they shatter. What a good damn dangerous product. I cant see how any state can make them legal for road use.

Same. Reduce weight and get heat out of the engine bay. I don't see how that's 'rice'... Personally I think changing the leds behind your cluster is more 'rice' then a carbon or fibreglass bonnet with venting...

ORSMXR has one on his BA. Carbon fibre bonnets aren't ricey <they serve a purpose>, painting your standard bonnet black is.
