i had a go at this last weekend... as with most painting its 95% preperation... the more time and effort you put in to sanding etc. the better the finish will be...

i had what pretty rough patch on the lower lip of intake side which i smoothed with a grinder, some filing and a decent amount of sanding...

i didnt bother stripping the original paint... started with 800 (dry) went to 800 (wet) and finished with 1200 (wet)... it took a good cople of hours and at least 3 cans of Jack Daniels before i was happy with the prep...

i used VHT anodised engine primer and top coat... the finish came up quite well and i probably wont worry about clear coat...

ready for paint...

3 coats of primer...

and finally 4 coats of colour...

spent forever and a day using paint stripper so that the surface was nice and clean. Gave it a quick going over with a fine sandpaper and then applied a few coats of anodized base coat (recommended if using anodized top coat)

Image

Allowed a few hours for it to dry and then applied the final colour. Turned out rather well

i sanded mine back hard to get rid of the texture, primed it, sanded it, then used a wet on wet primer, and sprayed it body color and used 2k clear.
has awesome shine and holds up well to the heat.
if u know a spray painter, it should only cost u about $50 for materials.
even when the gloss starts to dull u can just polish the clear again.
i'll try get some photos tomorrow

Mine was simply sandblasted, sprayed with VHT Engine Primer, then VHT Engine Enamel in Ford Light Blue.

Hey icwoodsy i was just woundering wat part number was the paint that you used, because that color is F**KING unbeleivable... im not much of a painter but do u (or anybody) think if you put a light layer of black as the bottom layer then put the 3 layers of red that it would come up as a dark red or do u think it would just rouin it?

again that looks unbeleivable... :D

cheers...

the paint is VHT Hi Temperature Anodised Color Coat... SP450 Anodised Red...

dont know about the light layer of black... i'm pretty sure that you need to use the anodised undercoat to get the finish... but you could give it a go on a piece of scrap... or a fence post and see what happens...

it will look a little darker once you bolt it back on... 8-)
