using both a primer (etch primer if you have it at bare metal) and a clear coat will make the finish 11ty times better
take your time and do many light coats rather than a few thicker coats.

Both times i have done it i have done it with out an undercoat i just strip the paint back and then use some Engine Enamel and spray away ! Always has come up looking fine. The only time i recommend a primer is when using Anodized Colour Coat !

Would be best to use high temp clear, but on the rocker covers i have painted i have used Duplicolour Clear enamel (just normal clear) as that what i had lying around. Haven't had any issues with it, holds up fine and after a quick polish after it cures it turns out real glossy. |

i had a go at this last weekend... as with most painting its 95% preperation... the more time and effort you put in to sanding etc. the better the finish will be...
i had what pretty rough patch on the lower lip of intake side which i smoothed with a grinder, some filing and a decent amount of sanding... i didnt bother stripping the original paint... started with 800 (dry) went to 800 (wet) and finished with 1200 (wet)... it took a good cople of hours and at least 3 cans of Jack Daniels before i was happy with the prep... i used VHT anodised engine primer and top coat... the finish came up quite well and i probably wont worry about clear coat... ready for paint... 3 coats of primer... and finally 4 coats of colour... |

Good job thanks... i used a little over half a can of primer and 1 can of colour... the paint was around $18 a can... 3 sheets of sand paper... all up $40... i didnt mention that i gave it a good wipe down with a clean cloth and some wax and grease remover before the primer went on... i already had this laying around but from memory it was under $10 for a 1 litre bottle... |

But why have you needed to do it twice, or was it on another cover The first time i used Engine Enamel "GM Blue" and then after 10 months the colour wasnt doing it for me anymore so i thought i would try anodized paint on the same cover. BUT WOW after looking at the cover above next time i might use some primer (keeping in mine was all a budget job) Heres my first job (After stipper, not the good kind) By peaandham, shot with VPC-S500 at 2009-03-31 By peaandham, shot with VPC-S500 at 2009-04-01 heres my second By peaandham, shot with FinePix A600 at 2010-01-17
