Hey guys,
My AU has a rusty boot lid, unfortunately the victim of a shonky spoiler fitment in the ford factory, the boot has leaked for the last 8 years and has caused some serious cancer, we asked them to fix it about 9 times while it was under warenty and they told us they had every time, but as you can see from the pic below they never really did. This damage is the worst of it but it is similar on the other side also, the yellow outline shows where the inner skin has completely gone. I got a price off ford for a brand spanker but they want $690 for it unpainted, I'm buggered if I'm willing to spend that much on a boot lid, so my question is would I be better off looking for a second hand job or get the rust cut out and repair the lid? I'm not putting a spoiler back on it either. Any advice welcome, to me it looks like it'd be a prick of a job to fix but I'm not a panel beater. Also has anyone ever had rust anywhere else in an AU that I should be looking out for? Keep in mind I've had the car since 98, it's never been garaged and I lived about 700 meters from the beach fo 7 of those years. It's just about due for a full revamp. Cheers!

It is, but it is the only rust I have seen in it anywhere, there is a chance there is more rust in it but I'll find out soon when we pull it apart for a respray. Is there any common places that I should look that you know of?

Is there any common places that I should look that you know of? Where the boot strut joins to the car. If you have mudspats check behind them, also check the underside of your bonnet and the back of the door (the part that touches the door rubber, sometimes paint rubs off and rust will form.) |

Cheers Glenn,
There is a little rust around the boot struts but it looks pretty minor, I pulled the taillights off the other day and found some rust around the plates that seem to connect the rear bumper to the body but you could pretty much pull these off and re-weld some new ones on without too much hassle, after seeing that though I'm expecting there'd be similar rust under the headlights. Panel rust doesn't worry me as much as rust in the body parts that can't just be pulled out and replaced, but I suppose I'll find out when everything gets pulled off for the respray anyway, I just don't want any nasty surprises. I have to say though after 7 years in the salt air it hasn't done too bad, better than my old XE and XF, they rotted to bits in a couple of years.

just a personal opinion.
id get the spoiler put back on and make sure its sealed properly, a panel beater will do it better than ford just a personal preference i think AU's look a** ugly without spoilers, same with BA's as they have a rounded a** end.

FaBz: Yeh it's an AU.
Gaz: I hate the spoiler to death, never been a fan of boot garnish on any car that can't get over 240km/h, it's just pointless and it's really ugly.

Check my gallery, its got some pics of my old AU without a spoiler. IMO they look mint as! So sleek. AU's look good with or without spoilers, but i reckon ba's look s**t with them. |

my au has the factory small bobtail wing just to hide the ugliness of it.
but for some reason glenns old au looks excellent without a spoiler.
