welcome to a very common problem my friend..... 3 things.......
1) horse shoe clip is broken..
2)the leg that attaches the horse shoe clip to the inside of the bumper is snapped...
3) the plastic lug that is plugged into the metal body that is guided into the horse shoe clip is snapped...

*all three cause the bumper to sag... :?

Was playing with mine over xmas - Also possible that the mounts for horse shoe clip are broken, which is why my bumper is nearly falling off. A lagre blob of glue did wonders for mine.

I have just realised that the rear bumper of my el xr has started to sag on the drivers side. I can see a gap of about 5mm. I have justed had all of the suspension done so the ride is a lot harder now so something must have broken in there because of the increased harshness of the bumps. Are the clips etc still available new from ford?

is this where its sagging?? (pic below)

there are the horse shoe clips on each side of the bumper and these plastic lugs that stick out from the body that hold the horse shoe clips up. after i replaced the horse shoe clips on my bumper it still has a small gap on the sides like in pic and im prety sure its the plastic lugs have slightly bent down (you will see what im on about when ya get the bumper off) id replace both horse shoe clips and both these lugs as they dont cost much. have you had the bumper off before?? the splash guards in the rear wheel arch on mine were held in by these stupid pop rivet things and i had to drill them out and replace them with plastic scrivets same with the bit of sheet metal that holds the botom of the bumper to the spare wheel well. let me know how ya go cos if you replace thoese lugs and it fixes the gap im gona take my bumper off again as i only replaced the horse shoe clips and i dont like that gap.

Not sure if there is much of a gap on the side like that (only had a quick look last night when I noticed it and it was dark) the gap is more above the exhaust cutout underneath the tail light. I will have to have a look tonight if I have time. Anyone know what the part number or description of these clips and lugs are so I can just ring up and order them from ford as there isn't a ford dealer here anymore as they were s**t and had to close. How many of each do I need to order?

how lucky are you, i found the old broken one laying around the shed. the number it has on it is 94da 17b876aa one is the part number and im not sure what the other number is or witch one is witch, oh that is for the horse shoe clip. DESCRIPTION plastic clip that holds up corner of rear bumper and you want two of them, one for each side. ford should be able to figure it out for ya

mate you're a dead set aussie legend.

I am guessing you have to take the whole rear bumper off to change this?? I think I will be putting up a few "how the hell do you get the rear bumper of an EL" type questions soon. Thanks for that!!

easy as piss.
don't but the horseshoe clips until you know it them thats broken
i bought new ones, and worked out it was on my bar thats broken.
fixed with liquid nails for about a week, then both sides broke again.
as for the rear bar, theres a bunch or screws or rivits behind each wheel, the theres 2 bolts going into each chassis rail, which are accessed through the boot floor. remove carpet, and there should be some rubber lugs, near the back of the car in the boot.

yep bumper has to come off. remove the splash guards in rear wheel arches and ya should see a bolt holding the end of the bumper up on each side, remove these bolts. mine had a plate holding the rear skirt to the spare wheel well this had to come off to. now remove the carpeted plastic sides in the boot and you should see a rubber gromit in the chassis rail on both sides, remove gromit and remove the bolts that are in there(2 each side and dont drop them cos they are realy hard to get back) now you can slide the bumper out from the car a bit and get ya hand in and disconect the number plate light then slide the bumper the rest of the way off and ya done.

well that pic didnt turn out real good. arrow closest to taillight is where the horse shoe clips are and the other one is the bolt holding the end of the bumper up-1 each side
