Has anybody actually got one of these or something similar to it?
It's called rust guard, it says that it provides ELECTRONIC RUST PROTECTION. I'm not too bothered by the rust protection aspect, but what does interest me is they claim, "A cleaner car. Sounds similar to the sacrificial anodes that you put on aluminum boats and outboard motors but without the sacrifice. Theres probably some truth to it but you'd need to see it in action and compare two cars in the same conditions one with and one without to know for sure.

Its slows it down it doesn't stop it.
My mate has the electronic rust protection on his BA Fairmont V8 and it still has surface rust and little spots of rust in the engine bay. Very little. But its marketing. |

What Timmeh said, it just slows it down. The device runs a small amount of current through the chassis, which slows down the reaction process of rusting where oxygen reacts with the metal to create a metal oxide we see as rust.
Only way to stop rust is to have the metal unexposed to anything containing oxygen...which is pretty hard. Covering the metal in something always works a treat, like Soulfire's Soarer which is galvanized causing minimal to no rust. phong =P~

ok cool, well i don't really give a f**k about the rust aspect of it.
I'm really only interested in the dust aspect, they claim that it reduces static charge build up, in turn reducing the amount of dirt and dust that will stick to you car. Can anybody whose seen one of these devices fitted to a car confirm or deny their claim? cheers, Jason. |

How much dust are you talking about?
I doubt it will stop heavy dust, I'd say its aimed more at the sort of dust it might pick up parked in a garage, otherwise it'd need some serious powr supply, and that's just gonna drain your battery. Honestly never seen it in action but I'd say it will deflect a little dust but not enough to warrant the price.

What nedkelly said. Since there is a small amount of current running through the chassis, a small amount of charge also builds which may repel dust. It would be like when you rub a plastic rod with a woolen cloth and it has a charge causing small dust to attract to the rod, but instead of attract it is repel.
I wouldn't buy the product though. phong =P~

I’m not talking about huge amounts of dust, but whenever I wax my car, which is fairly regularly, it attracts annoying amounts of dust and I'm forever getting zapped. I'm not really looking to buy one of these units cause they vary in price up to about $500, I can live with the dust and zapping for that kinda price, I am simple curious if these things actually do what they claim.
I understand if they were really good, it would be the car manufactures selling these things. And more people would have them. Cheers, Jason. |

There's the same principle in action, maybe it's worth it if you wax your car on a regular basis just to undo the positive charge, but there could be a cheaper solution that doesn't require battery power, it might just be a case of earthing the chassis after each wax? Unfortunately I'm no an electro physicist, maybe an auto electrician will have some ideas?

Unfortunately I'm no an electro physicist, maybe an auto electrician will have some ideas? everytime he gets zapped the charge is discharged onto him...so another words get zapping and when zapped the body goes back to normal charge...which won't attract dust, but will sit and collect dust pulled down by gravity.
