I know of someone I met driving a commodore and he'd shaved the handles and used solenoids by remote. Only problem I see is if your remote battery dies or the solenoid packs it in and you're on the outside. At least the current handles are mechanical.

Well yeah but what if your car battery goes flat? No way to get into the car to pop the bonnet to replace the battery to get your doors open
You could somehow integrate buttons into the base window trim? Cut a section separate to the rest so you'd never notice but then a section of it would actually be your door release. That way it'd be a mechanical connection to the existing lock meaning not having to worry about flat batteries and being locked out. Though you may need to spring load the door so it pops out a couple of cm's so you have something to grab and open the door with. Though that last point would be the same as using solenoids.

Thats all good till your car battery goes flat. You'd need some way to pop the bonnet.... Then anyone can open it... Cool for a show car but not so good for a daily.

not to mention legally you still require some form of external mechanism, encase of emergency situation.
so a lot of mini truckers have a lttle latch rod in the bottom corner or some integrate something into the black window surround. check out mini trucker forums. personally I'd consider it to screwy encase of something going wrong.
