hey all, i am looking at a turbo kit which i want to buy in the coming months (snort performance stage 4 kit - biggest single turbo kit they make)
now with the front bar, i dont wanna cut the kit AT ALL!!! so im thinking of mounting the cooler a little higher so it sits abouve the kit and wont melt the bumper ect now with the cooler mounted this high, the majority of the cooler will now be behind the main section of the bumper. in my current bumper i have a hole where i think one of the previous owners had someone reverse into them leaving a towbar hole in the bumper.. i was thinking of cutting 2 holes in the bumper (neatening up the current one and fully removing the plastic) and making them flair out past the bracing behind the plastic outer shell. do you think this will help enough with air flow? are there any other ways i can increase air flow without the cooler showing too much or cutting the bumper fins or the kit which overlays the bottom fin and this one you can see the dent where the towbar went through |

Possibly buy some flexi-hose ducting ( the stuff for intake pipes) or possible a vent going from under the bar thru to the cooler.
Or save up for a water-air intercooler. More efficient, more expensive and more hassles.

also remember the numberplate is also there, and the brace for the bumper behind it which i will have to cut and as it is the part that protects me i dont want to cut too much out

here is a dodgy cut and paste of where the cooler would fit (not the actual cooler being used)

dont worry about the cooler melting anything, how hot do you think the compressed air gets? shouldnt be more than 60 on the hot side.
Also water/air intercoolers are only more efficient it short bursts, not if your going to be on boost for a while (track/ going up a hill ect.) combine the intercooler with a thermo fan, mount it lower and black it out, no one will be able to see it and being black will allow it to radiate more heat |

its not the air heat im worried about its the metal cooler touching the bumper. the lowest the cooler can sit is just above the bottom fin on the bumper as it drops back and under. it will be painted.
cheers for the pics, it gives me more indication on what can fit. as mine will be manual i wont have the oil coolers, but i will need to thave the aircon bottle thing moved to the side somewhere or where the air box normally is |

2 pics are from my 5 speed wreck, which shows a better view of the amount of room available

man, the original bumper makes it look like theres heaps more room.
I saw guy last week who bought an ea turbo with a unique yet visually appealling and intellectually stimulating airflow setup. The area where the number plate goes was cut out and in its place was an oilcooler >> intercooler >> aircon radiator >> normal radiator Cant remember where aircon capsule was removed to. I could put u in-touch with him if your keen, but ure after the stock look arent you?

how hot will the intercooler get since it's running air at 60odd and air rushing past it at a cool temp? last time i checked metal wasn't like 200 degrees when the highest temp it was subjected to was 60 degrees?

fair enough... its just that the exhaust can melt the bumper so i thorght that the intercooler might be similar to that..
