 I was thinking more of the VX/VY/VZ commonwhore utes, with 20" wheels and IRS, absolutely useless as a ute, and some of the BA/BF/FG ute owners treat there utes like a two-door coupe with a big boot, too scared of getting it dirty to use it. A guy I work with drives a VY ute, nice enough car, but he borrows the work ute (Hilux) to do dump runs, etc! What's the point of having a ute if you cant use it?  Ash, your ute is more of a rolling business card, for the wood-working you do, so you get a free pass.

lol Ash, my merbau's seen better days. best thing is though, i bought a cheap 5L can of clear decking oil so every few months i just slap some more on hap-hazardly,give it a wash and it looks great again lol
it's seen alot more than a tonne on it and towed quite a few. lifter rattle and all, gotta love a falcon ute

I agree, if you own a ute it should be used for what it is made for, (i have taken mine camping and on surf trips a couple times and it has been great) But i don't see a problem in making it look nice at the same time. As long as you keep the practicability of it you should be all good.
When i lower mine i will get new heavy duty leafs to keep the heavy load capability as apposed to the pathetic carrying efforts of the commodore utes haha

Hmm... This is just I rough list o things I want to do in the near future...
Fg black rims with red tyre wall. Red leather seats. Red foot well lighting. Upgrade speakers, using an amp to run speakers. Maybe redo steering wheel leather, gear selector boot, add srs airbag. Then there's the handling and performance... Low king spings and associated bushes, shocks, etc... Ignition leads, iridiums, improved induction, exhaust, ryco filters (oil, fuel, air)...

if you didnt live so far away, i would definately come around to see your skills/ideas. i really like low-ryda's tray, but of a*** change a few little things to adjust to my taste and needs. trying to think of the best setup to contrast and compliment the black colour of my ute.
i wish i had the room to make one up myself, or at least give it a go. i could maybe get away with the rails and tray, but that would be a difficult thing to come across...

When done well, I agree it's a really good clean finish to a ute. But I see what you mean about being impractical in certain situations.
Are you going to make them permanent or detachable?

i'll be working from scratch really... will need to buy almost everything (except tools). my uncle and his son are both carpenters and hopefully they will help me out with the decking (tools, materials, labour, etc), which will be a massive hand cause to be honest... im not really that great with wood. cant just weld over my stuff ups... haha.
hmm... im thinking about $800 plus the little things (welding rods, grinding discs, etc). hmm... have to start saving. if you have any not-so-obvious suggestions, eg the partial sides, let us know so i can incorporate them into my design...  cheers

Going back a little, I lowered mine 50mm, unfortunately, the rear went down 65, still carry a bike though.
BF XR skirts and rear bumper do make a nice improvement.

Yeh mine got modded the other day. My daughter backed it. Put a dent in the corner of the bumper bar. She didn't see it. Apparently. I mentioned that it was sitting out in the middle of the yard and is considerably bigger than her car. ?????

bet that made your day ash, i got a pretty large lump of something into the centre of my windscreen the other day. Luckily its just put a bit of a scratch/dent in the glass instead of a crack or chip.
still trying to figure out how to weld up the frame without losing my ute for an extended time, or having to get a wreck... would love to see the under side of a tray back if anyone has a pic?

yeah just one of those things though i guess, most of the time no one is at fault... but sucks that your the one left to fix the problem (and pay for it).
hmmm... if i can do it right i will use all 8 bolts, or just use the best bolts i can get through work and use the four like you have done. cheers, i might see if i can get a custom tray place to weld me up a basic jig for the mounting points... shouldnt be too expensive IF they are willing to help me out. just a basic frame of some discription...

you make valid point there, thinking about it that way i see why you didnt think all eight were needed.
I would be making it from a reasonably solid structure, im not overly worried about the final weight, i would rather it hold up against anything i put on it... plus if it doesnt look too silly i will be putting under tray storage on it, so it doesnt matter too much if the structure lifts it an inch or so...
