G'day,
Yes I know there is a topic on panel beating etc but the person who was running has disappeared. I'm going to do my spray my own car using 2k. My clear coat is flaking. Do I need to sand back to top coat or back to primer? What grade of wet and dry sandpaper do I need to use first and finish last with? I think my original colour DG (Congo Green) is acrylic based. Can I spray directly over Acrylic after using prepsol? Any advise on this would be appreciated Cheers, Peter |

if its acrylic based then car has to come back to bare metal...
Make sure you are using 2k primers as well.... If it was acrylic based paint then yes you could sand back to a good surface and prime and spray.... here is a good link... http://www.thebugshop.org/bsfqpnt.htm

Is it the AU?? then that should be 2k based....
if so you can sand down do a good surface.. the job will only be as good as the effort you put in, surface prep is the biggest job...... I have painted a few cars but I use acrylic as it is more forgiving to paint.... Plus the fact my spray gun is setup for it...... I normally rub down with 400 wet & dry, then 800 on the primer.... Prepare for sore arms and dont rush the job cos it will show in the final result.....

Yes it is an AU, Year 2000, Series II Question is I don't know if the original paint is 2k based, I assume its acrylic. I was told 2k is more hardier and lasts longer and does not need as much application as acrylic. I might get 4 liters of 2k as I'd like to have some coats as opposed to just 2 coats. I hope the air compressor does the job. I'll get a few sheets of wet and dry, I wont rush this job as I'd like it to be good. What would be required for the plastic bumper? Do cars around the EF/EL era (1994-98) use acrylic from factory, or did they change ??

the au will be 2k NOT acrylic
same as the ef/el's a good way to tell if it is acrylic is tog et some thinners on a rag and place on the paint if it comes off it is acrylic  if ya air compressor cant pump out enough air it will look like poo you could do short paint runs to help stop this and as AU99 said u only need to sand back to a good surface hell you can even just use a green scotch brite pad with some blend prep on it to rough up the clear and go from there with the new colour

Need to sand back the clear coat really, dont have to go to primer but in some spots it probably will as you sand it anyway using 800 wet n dry, wet. Use 2000 on your clearcoat and buff it.
Hit up google, theres quite a lot of pages about spraying and prep work. |

Yeah, thanks for the tips - funnily enough I used metho on house paint to figure out if it was acrylic or enamel (acrylic comes off of course).
I found that link AU99 posted a while ago, and it is good reading. I've got similar with an EF XR6 wagon I bought - be nice to put a few new coats on. Being a not great experienced painter, what's the best to go for - acrylic or 2K ?? Can acrylic be used on a 2k base, or does it need to go to bare metal as per 2k on acrylic in the above post ??

with 2k you dont need as many coats... have seen cars with just one coat....
Acrylic needs about 4-5 coats just to cover.... If your clear is flaking the you have to get that off at least.... what can happen is when you apply your nice new paint the clear will start to lift, that you dont want!!!

That's some good points - the clear on the bonnet is just about all gone, the guards have the top areas flaking.
I'll get some thinners and rub the bonnet just to test if it comes off (acrylic) or stays on.

Its not acrylic paint, its 2 pak. sand the clear off and stop once the colour gets dull, wipe it down and spray colour on.

Acylic can go on over 2K OK, have done it before on my last car..... Acylic is easier but more time consuming but more forgivable..... get a run no big deal, wait an hour and sand it out & respray... 2K takes all day to dry (without an oven) and you need a good resperator system so you dont inhale fumes....

I don't have the garage area to spray undercover, so I guess I have to get one of those Supercrap Auto outside garage things - $225 from memory.
I suppose if it just lasts for the painting, it might be money well spent - otherwise I suppose every bug/insect will make their way to the car straight after the paint's been put down. Reasonable idea ???

I seen a pro, he reckons mine was a 2k and the clear coat lifting seems to be appropriate after time in the sun. I'll try the thinner stuff on another section to see if it runs or not, that will tell me. Not prepared to ruin my car just yet to test it that is acrylic - v - enamel test. Cheers, Peter |
