Hi,
I was shocked to see one of my door mouldings hanging off yesterday, I didnt want it to fly off as I was driving, so I carefully peeled the last half of it off. The paint looks ok, but I dont know what I should glue it back on with ? I looks like it was last stuck on with a white silicone type stuff, which has stuck quite well to the paintwork on the car, but obviously didnt stick too well to the plastic. I'm considering using some sickaflex 291 as I have a spare tube, or mix up a big batch of araldyte. I'm not sure how suitable these are though. I do (by chance) have some double-sided tape from Autobarn, but I tried sticking it to the plastic moulding, and it felt like it'd peel off pretty easy. Prehaps I should prime the back of the moulding with something ? Any hints/tips welcome. |

A Panel beater friend of mine uses double sided tape on the top and bottom edges and sickaflex 221 in the middle. Unfortunately It never stuck too well to the moulding lasting anywhere from 1-6months usually failing when the weather got hot. Recently I have tried a differant tact. Painted the inside of the moulding with fibreglass resin, leaving that to go off for 24 hours. Then using the double sided tape and Sikaflex 291 marine sealant down the middle. Can't say how effective it is as its only been a little over a month so far.

Try the proper double sided tape, but before you use it, clean the back of the moulding and the door with Prepsol. It'll help the adhesion.

I agree, the heat certainly doesnt help adhesion. I think this is the reason it came off in the first place.
Today I went to Mitre 10 and got some of that no-name brand stuff, I cleaned both the pastic and the door with some acetone I had handy, and it seems to have stuck ok. It's only been one day, but tomorrow is forecast to top 42deg. so we'll see what happens. I know the sickaflex is some good stuff, I've got a tube of 291 (marine) left over from the boat, It sticks like buggery and it's a dog to get off, so if it comes off again, I might try that. Thanks for the feedback. |
