Technically the police can book you for having anything darker then 35%. In saying that I have ahd 20% on my last 2 caars and 15% on the Coupe and no hassles from the police. As long as they arent being picky I guess.

But go 20% soo much better coming into a hot summer!

I don't know anything about window tinting, so I just want to how the %'s work. The lower the percentage, the darker the tint or the other way around? And also, what % is the darkest you allowed to go to in Vic?

35% is the legal limit in all of Australia.

The percentage is the amount of light it lets in. THe lower the number the darker it is.

yes it is illegal, and i dont think you would last an hr without a cop booking you for it, plain obvious and they definatly wont like it.

good luck gettin a tint place to do it aswell, technically i believe their not even allowed to fit below 35%

i had 5% on a car for 3yrs and never had a hassle once. When the cops pull u over open the sunroof and a window, light makes your tint way less dark :P

Not when you have C**k cops pulling you over.
3 weeks ago, i just got done for window tint. Had both my front windows down, and the d**k comes along with his sunnies claiming they were too dark (mind you they were 35%) . Take it to the pits the following week, turns out they went down to 22% :| Had that tint for 2 years with no hassel :( Even at night!

My mate just got done also for 5% tint, again by a C**k cop. Before that, hadnt been caught for 3-4 years.

i think you were just really really unlucky doofus..

anyway, i got the 20% done, looks awesome! and obviously will get a little darker over the week. I'll get pics up on the weekend

And to the guy who asked about tinting the front windows, not only is it highly illegal, but it is pretty stupid. Tint actually alters the vision, as it gives it a little bit of a blur, especially when its first been done. and if a cop sees any hint of a tinted windscreen, he will come down on you like a sack of bricks

Thanks for the input guys ;) hopefully have pics up here soon

theres a window fitter in town that does tints in his spare time. all cash ($50 cheaper than others in town) and would do what ever you want for the right price

I had a car come in smashed with the front screen tinted slightly it was very light but with 20 on the sides it looked pretty dark when the insurance co assessed it the assessor noticed and they honoured the claim. Here is the doco from Qld Transport light vehicle mods guide you should be able to get this guide for your state from the web Glazing
(windscreen and windows)
No material or other object is to be located on the
windscreen or windows which will interfere with the
driver’s vision. Tinted windscreens are permitted subject
to the screen having an optical transmission of not less
than 75 per cent for a motor vehicle built after 1971 and
70 per cent for any other vehicle.
Transparent material used in a windscreen, window or
interior partition of a motor vehicle manufactured after
June 1953, must have the characteristics required by any
of the following standards:
•Vehicle with factory-tinted
glass
Most new vehicles are fitted with tinted window glass.
This tint is very light and glass may at first appear to
clear. To check, hold a piece of white paper on the
opposite side of the glass. If it has a slight grey, green
brown colour when viewed through the glass, the glass
is tinted.
Special grades of film may be applied to factory tinted
windows. When these films are applied to tinted glass,
the combination of tints must still allow 35 per cent
light transmittance.
Windscreens
Tinting may be fitted to the upper portion of a
windscreen of a motor vehicle. The tinting must not
extend lower than a horizontal line connecting the
uppermost points of the arcs swept by the vehicle
manufacturer’s original wiper blades or the upper
10 per cent of the windscreen, whichever is the lesser.
The tinting may be of any shade but must not have
reflectance of more than 10 per cent.
