Hi.

I have been right through the forum posts and the docs, but have not come accross any information on adding a smartlock setup to a non smartlock car.

I have a 92 EB GLI without smartlock and a unreg 93 EB11 fairmont with a blown engine.

What I would like to do is move accross as many of the fairmont features as possible.

What is involved?

Would it be best to remove the complete body/dash harness from the fairmont and put it in the GLI?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards
BenJ

At a guess I would do the following.

Insert the Fairmont BEM into the GLi so you can access it. You will need the Smartlock computer chip installed into the GLi and then need to run the appropriate wires to the cluster, doors and sensors. THen you need to train the Smartlock keyfob to recognise hte car.

So what you suggest is that I work out a temp install to see if it works.

What if the only thing I am really interested in getting working is the remote central locking?

Would I need to interface the smartlock system with the car to do this?

Could it operate as a stand alone system?

Edmonty

The EB Fairmont is unregistered and requires a bit of work including fixing a blown head gasket.

It ended up cheaper to by the GLI as a going concern, as it came with CSA alloys, thermofan conversion, and lowered suspension.

Looking forward to further comments.

If you only want central locking you are better to get an alarm and central locking kit from say "strathfield car radio".
Wiring the BEM is not as simple as you may think, unless you are hapy with elecrtics. The bem needs to get codes from the ignition switch and if they are ok it tells the ECU to allow it to start the engine. I have just put an EL dash in to my EA with BEM etc a lot of work and wiring, also I have been in electronics all my life and it still nearly drove me mad with some of the silly fauls that occoured.

Thanks for you reply.

I think your suggestion may be the way to go.

I plan to move from the fairmont the
Trip Computer
Electric Windows
Climate Control (maybe)
Instrument Cluster
Centre Console
Seats (mabye)
Roof Lining (GLI has a tear)
and if I am doing the Roof Lining I will put in the reading lamps etc.

The GLI already has Cruise Control, and central locking, so I will just strip the components to keep as spares.

With all of this the small things the BEM does wont be missed.

Thanks again for suggestions and advice
BenJ

Do everything.

The dash is a straight out swap, as is the body loom. If you gut both the cars from the A pillars back and swap the mont stuff into the GLI, is is all plug and play. I've done it! It is a time consuming job, but definately not tricky.

One thing with the climate control is the ambient temp sensor. You should have the plug for that near your horn loom, just check before you do the swap, otherwise run a couple of wires for it when you have the dash's out. Mine was already there on the XR8.

For the Smartlock to work you will have to use all the BEM, ECU and ignition (key) module from the smartlock car, as the BEM and ignition module are coded together and the BEM talks to the ECU.

If you want more information on this, I put a bit of a doco on the interior forum a few months back. It is under the heading of "Dash Exchange" or "Dash Swap" or something like that, from about two to three months ago.

Hope this helps.
