Hi All,

Just looking for some suggestions please.

I have now completed the mod {DESCRIPTION} but the Fog/Spot/Driving warning circuit is not lighting when I switch the driving lights on.

I have checked the new Pin 8 on the Left Hand Side (Passenger Side) Instrument Cluster and it is receiving 12volts when the spots are switched on.

I'm not sure if the cluster is from an EF or EL but as the 1N4004 Signal Diode was not present as per the image below I added one. I assume as you don't need to add this to the EF cluster I must have an EL cluster (although I though the EL clusters had orange needles. Mine has clear ones)

I have tested the diode with a multimeter for resistance and it seems to be OK. This test was done with the cluster on the bench, no power running to it. I placed the multimeter probes onto the soldered circuit rather than the pins on the resistor. The solder joins seem to be fine.

I have swapped the light bulb for one know to be working.

I cannot think of anything else I could try so am open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance...

EL dash has grey facia and less increments on the speedo.

Based on that mine is an EF cluster. Therefore I should not have added the diode.

So if that is the case and there is no need to add the diode to the EF cluster I'm surprised the space is still available to add one. I assumed both EF and EL cluster circuit board were the same and the space would already be filled with a diode on the EF version.

I will remove the diode tomorrow and see how I get on.

Cheers

Just to check...

You have installed a rectifier diode (not any other type of diode) and installed it with the correct polarity?

You've checked for 12 to the pin... Have you checked both sides of the diode to see if 12V is both getting to it and going out the other side?

Cheers,
Tim

Yes it is a rectifier diode, as per the spec in the Tech Doc.

No, not done this. As mentioned:

I am not to sure how to bench test this with 12V running to the board. Would I just connet the Pin 8, of the Left Hand Side (Passenger Side) Instrument Cluster to a 12v source and Pin 18 to ground?

Thanks

I'd leave all the faces off... identify which bulb needs to light and (as faces wont be on you need to remember which bulb it is)... sit it in the car (the bare board, make sure it doesn't short on any steel) and plug the looms in... turn the car & fog lights on... check pin 18 where they come out of the plug onto the board (test lamp or multimeter... One lead to earth and probe pin 18), make sure there is volts to the board (after the plug), next probe both sides of the diode to make sure the is volts either side of it.

Cheers,
Tim

Thanks for that Tim. I will give it a go in the morning.

OK this is now sorted :D

The diode was around the wrong way although I followed the instruction in the Tech Doc correctly.

So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say both the image and the instruction "The Diode ! MUST ! sit in the direction where the Silver Band (the Cathode end) is towards the centre of the circuit board" are wrong.

The cathode end (with the band) must sit towards to out edge of the circuit board. This is also the direction in which all other diodes on the board face.

Thanks to all those that helped.

No worries...

So you discovered you had 12 Volts at the banded end instead of the other end?

Simple swap and it was good...

No worries... happy days...

Cheers,
Tim

:? --- hi , i have fitted a FAIRLANE cluster to my EL gli/spec wagon--i worked out how to put the resistor in for the LCD to work on parkers { it had to be bridged across- neg/earth blackwire- & lcd neg- whitewire } on the righthand plug---had to do this as fairlane board is different circut to gli/fairmont/xr boards==== :?: would anyone know where i have to fit diode to be able to have the fog/spot lamp working?????????????

no need for the diode, I've had both ef, nf, and nl clusters in my car with operational foglight warnig light, with out adding the diode to any.
long story........

Bump.
I fitted up a mont cluster in my EF futura wagon, added a line to pin 8 and fed it 12v - doesn't illuminate.
EF cluster in an EF.
Do I bother adding the diode, or just run a feed directly into the back of the globe holder?

I'd add the diode.

It really is easy to do and neater than running a feed into the globe holder

Yeah if it'll fix it then I will, just wondering what the deal is with some clusters working straight up while others don't; going against the doco

Hi,

There are different " levels " of cluster depending on model. It is done to save costs at production, and it makes it harder to upgrade later. I got my Multimeter out, and it seems the Tech doc is wrong.
